A system and method for handicapping a ball game such as tennis or volleyball between opponents of lesser and greater skills, by varying or moving at least one of the parameters of the court on which the game is played, a sufficient amount to balance the disparity in such skills. The parameters described are the net, and court boundary lines which may be defined by electric luminescent tape embedded in, or fastened to, the surface of the court floor in parallel spaced lines which selectively can be lit to define the desired boundary, or, may be defined by projected lines on or adjacent to the floor from narrow beam or laser beam projectors capable of projecting lines at desired locations either from overhead or at floor level.

Adjustable ball court system and method for handicapping a contest

A method and apparatus are disclosed for the reduction of mold cycle time. A deflatable member is positioned flush with the surface of a mold in an opening defined downwardly therein. Prior to flow of a resin or other hardenable liquid within the mold, the deflatable member is deflated so as to define a resin flow channel across selected portions of the mold surface. Prior to hardening of the hardenable liquid within the mold, the deflatable member is inflated so as to become flush with the surface of the mold so as to yield an article of manufacture having a relatively planar surface.

Method and apparatus for reduction of mold cycle time

A method and apparatus for making a charge used in molding a fiber reinforced part. Continuous strands of fibers are impregnated with resin and then cut into segments of predetermined lengths. The segments are collected so that the resin impregnated fiber segments are piled together to form the charge. In one embodiment, the fibers are collected in a controlled manner to provide preselected fiber orientation for the molded part. Also a cutter mechanism is provided for cutting resin impregnated fiber strands pulled over a first rotating drum.

A non-metallic leaf spring in which a unitary body member is made up of strands of glass fibers distributed in a matrix of polymerized epoxy resin. The spring is provided with end fittings and a mounting assembly intermediate the ends of the spring by which the spring can be mounted between suspended and unsuspended structures without causing stress concentrations at the non-metallic spring. The method and apparatus by which the spring is manufactured casues strands of fiber to be distributed throughout the spring at a substantially uniform density throughout the longitudinal length of the spring.

A method and apparatus for impregnating strands of fibers with resin are disclosed. The resin is recirculated through the interior of a substantially closed container. The strands are pulled through the interior of the container in essentially a straight line manner. The fibers in each strand are spread by running them across a plurality of transversely extending bars in the interior of the container while the fibers are immersed in the resin.

Apparatus is disclosed for compresseion molding a part from a charge having a curable resin therein. Provision is made for defining a vacuum chamber surrounding the mold cavity when the upper and lower dies are brought to a partially closed position. The vacuum chamber includes a vertically movable ring surrounding the upper die which is urged into sealing engagement with a surface surrounding the lower die. The ring has a wiper blade mounted in a position to contact the side wall of the upper die thereby permitting relative vertical movement between the ring and die. The mold cavity is rapidly evacuated and then the upper die is brought into a fully closed position while the resin cures.

Compression molding apparatus having vacuum chamber

Apparatus is disclosed for compression molding a part from a charge having a curable resin therein. Provision is made for defining a vacuum chamber surrounding the mold cavity when the upper and lower dies are brought to a partially closed position. The vacuum chamber includes a vertically movable ring surrounding the upper die which is urged into sealing engagement with a surface surrounding the lower die. The space between the ring and the upper die is sealed with a flexible diaphragm having an inner edge rigidly attached to the upper die and an outer periphery rigidly attached to the ring member thereby permitting relative vertical movement between the ring and die. The mold cavity is rapidly evacuated and then the upper die is brought into a fully closed position while the resin cures.

A swingable impact tool and a method of making it wherein the tool has a metal head fastened both chemically and mechanically to a handle made of a composite of materials including a pultrusion of fiberglass filaments in a matrix of polymerized thermosetting resin covered by elastomeric urethane form which protects the core member from impact loads and absorbs the transfer of shock loads to the hands of the user. Metal or plastic members are used to reinforce critical areas of the handle adjacent the head and the stem member disposed within the socket in the head.

An energy attenuator for absorbing impact of a foreign object against a body to be protected. The energy attenuator comprising a plurality of layers in a desired form or shape and each layer may be separated from the adjacent layer by films of high temperature resistant thermoplastic materials, which are neither soluble in nor compatible with or modified by the molding conditions encountered in processing the laminates or layers. The energy attenuator may be manufactured by either a buildup process whereby each layer is formed, then separated by a separating material, another layer is then deposited upon the material forming a laminate structure which may be made to the desired thickness by continually forming layers with separators between each layer or the separate layers may be formed individually and then assembled by stacking them into a laminated structure.

The invention relates to improving the viscosity temperature dependence of a maturated moldable unsaturated polyester resin system, by utilizing a dual thickening system consisting of an oxide or hydroxide of magnesium or calcium and a polyisocyanate, which dual thickening system provides a greatly improved viscosity index, i.e., less viscosity decrease with increase in temperature, thereby providing substantial advantages upon being subjected to temperature increases such as are encountered in molding.
