An apparatus and method for processing a data signal is provided. An acquisition unit of a test instrument acquires a data signal for a predetermined time. The data signal is stored in a memory of the test instrument and a clock recovery unit recovers a clock signal from the stored data signal. The stored data signal is sliced by a processor into a plurality of data segments of a predetermined length in accordance with the recovered clock signal.

Method and apparatus for analyzing serial data streams

An apparatus for processing a data signal is provided. The apparatus comprises an acquisition unit of a test instrument for acquiring a data signal for a predetermined time, a memory of the test instrument for storing the data signal, and a clock recovery unit for recovering a clock signal from the stored data signal. A processor slices the stored data signal into a plurality of data segments of a predetermined length in accordance with the recovered clock signal.

A method of processing a data signal is provided. The method comprises the steps of acquiring a data signal by an acquisition unit of a test instrument for a predetermined time and storing the data signal in a memory of the test instrument. A clock signal is recovered from the stored data signal, and the stored data signal is sliced into a plurality of data segments of a predetermined length in accordance with the recovered clock signal.

Method of analyzing serial data streams

A technique for analyzing a signal received from a recording medium. An input signal is received from the recording medium and analyzed in order to determine the location of errors within the input signal. The portion of the input signal determined to have an error is displayed. The analysis technique is selected from the group consisting of comparing the input signal with a reference signal, comparing a confidence factor indicative of the ease with which an apparatus that performs a channel emulation is able to select between alternate results for a portion of the input signal with a confidence factor indicative of the ease with which the apparatus that performs a channel emulation is able to select between alternate results of a portion of a reference signal, comparing the confidence factor indicative of the ease with which the apparatus that performs a channel emulation is able to select between alternate results of a portion of said input signal with a predetermined threshold, and comparing a Non Return to Zero (NRZ) component of the input signal with a stored NRZ signal.

Recording medium failure analysis apparatus and method

Self-calibration of a digitizer is carried out by using a square-wave test signal which is digitized by the digitizer, and temporal positions of the digitized values output by the digitizer are compared to respective reference periods of the test signal. The results of the comparison operations are then used by a microprocessor to calculate a time delay for adjusting a clock signal supplied to the digitizer.
