The present invention relates to an extra light hydrocarbon liquid derived from highly paraffinic wax. This extra light hydrocarbon liquid is suitable for use as a lubricant additive diluent oil in oil soluble additive concentrates. This extra light hydrocarbon liquid derived from highly paraffinic wax has a viscosity of between about 1.0 and 3.5 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. and a Noack volatility of less than 50 weight % and comprises greater than 3 weight % molecules with cycloparaffinic functionality and less than 0.30 weight percent aromatics. The extra light hydrocarbon liquid makes an excellent lubricant additive diluent oil because it has low volatility, low viscosity, good additive solubility, and excellent solubility in lubricant base oil stocks. The present invention also relates to finished lubricants comprising the oil soluble additive concentrates made with the extra light hydrocarbon liquid and finished lubricants comprising the oil soluble additive concentrates. The present invention further relates to processes for making these lubricant additive diluent oils, oil soluble additive concentrates, and finished lubricants.

Processes for producing extra light hydrocarbon liquids

Lubricant blends and finished gear oils comprising a lubricant base oil fraction derived from highly paraffinic wax, a petroleum derived base oil, and a pour point depressant are provided. The lubricant base oil fraction derived from highly paraffinic wax comprises less than 0.30 weight percent aromatics, greater than 5 weight percent molecules with cycloparaffinic functionality, and a ratio of weight percent of molecules with monocycloparaffinic functionality to weight percent of molecules with multicycloparaffinic functionality greater than 15. The petroleum derived base oils comprises greater than 90 weight percent saturates and less than 300 ppm sulfur and is preferably selected from the group consisting of a Group II base oil, a Group III base oil, and mixtures thereof. These lubricant blends have surprising low Brookfield viscosities at &#x2212;40&#xb0; C.

The dielectric fluids are useful as insulating and cooling mediums in new and existing power and distribution electrical apparatus, such as transformers, regulators, circuit breakers, switchgear, underground electrical cables, and attendant equipment.

A process for producing a lubricating base oil blend which comprises (a) recovering a Fischer-Tropsch derived distillate fraction characterized by a kinematic viscosity of about 2 cSt or greater but less than 3 cSt at 100 degrees C.; and (b) blending the Fischer-Tropsch derived distillate fraction with a petroleum derived base oil selected from the group consisting of a Group I base oil, a Group II base oil, a Group III base oil, and a mixture of two or more of any of the foregoing conventional base oils in the proper proportion to produce a lubricating base oil blend characterized as having a viscosity of about 3 or greater; also the base oil blends, finished lubricants, and their use in internal combustion engines.

Blending of low viscosity Fischer-Tropsch base oils with conventional base oils to produce high quality lubricating base oils

A process for preparing Fischer-Tropsch derived lubricating base oils by blending a Fischer-Tropsch distillate fraction having a viscosity of 2 or greater but less than 3 cSt at 100 degrees C. with a Fischer-Tropsch derived bottoms fraction; lubricating base oil compositions having a viscosity between about 3 and about 10 cSt at 100 degrees C. and a TGA Noack volatility of less than about 45 weight percent; and finished lubricants using the aforesaid lubricating base oils.

Blending of low viscosity Fischer-Tropsch base oils and Fischer-Tropsch derived bottoms or bright stock

A process for preparing Fischer-Tropsch derived lubricating base oils by blending a Fischer-Tropsch distillate fraction having a viscosity of 2 or greater but less than 3 cSt at 100 degrees C. with at least one additional Fischer-Tropsch derived distillate fraction having a viscosity of greater than 3.8 cSt at 100 degrees C.; lubricating base oil compositions having a viscosity between about 3 and about 10 cSt at 100 degrees C. and a TGA Noack volatility of less than about 35 weight percent; and finished lubricants using the aforesaid lubricating base oils.

Blending of low viscosity Fischer-Tropsch base oils to produce high quality lubricating base oils

The invention includes a process of making a lubricating composition including: contacting a heavy mineral oil feed in a hydrocracking zone with a hydrocracking catalyst at hydrocracking conditions, whereby at least a portion of the heavy mineral oil feed is cracked; recovering at least one gasoline-range fraction and one bottoms fraction from the hydrocracking zone; passing a first portion of the bottoms fraction including not more than about 67 wt. % of the bottoms fraction to a dewaxing zone; and passing a second portion of the bottoms fraction including at least about 33 wt. % of the bottoms fraction back to the fuels hydrocracker for additional processing; and where the bottoms fraction has a viscosity at 100&deg; C. of less than about 4.0; contacting the first portion of the bottoms fraction with a dewaxing catalyst under catalytic dewaxing conditions, where at least a portion thereof is substantially dewaxed; contacting at least a portion of the substantially dewaxed bottoms fraction with a hydrofinishing catalyst under hydrofinishing conditions, thereby producing a hydrofinished, dewaxed bottoms fraction; and removing from the hydrofinished, dewaxed bottoms fraction at least one light fraction including diesel or jet fuel range material, thereby leaving a heavy fraction including the lubricating composition having a naphthenes content of at least about 33 wt. %.

Process for making an automatic transmission fluid composition

The present invention provides for a lubricating composition including: a hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, low viscosity index mineral oil; from about 2 wt. % to about 14 wt. % of at least one polymethacrylate polymer; and from about 2 wt. % to about 14 wt. % of a performance additive package. The hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, low viscosity index mineral oil is prepared by: (1) passing a first bottoms portion including not more than about 67 wt. % of a fuels hydrocracker bottoms recycle stream to a dewaxing zone; and (2) passing a second bottoms portion including at least about 33 wt. % of the recycle stream back to the fuels hydrocracker for additional processing; and where the recycle stream has a viscosity at 100.degree. C. of less than about 4.0; (3) contacting the first bottoms portion with a dewaxing catalyst under catalytic dewaxing conditions, where at least a portion of the hydrocracker bottoms is substantially dewaxed; and (4) contacting at least a portion of the substantially dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms with a hydrofinishing catalyst under hydrofinishing conditions, thereby producing a hydrofinished, dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms; and removing from the hydrofinished, dewaxed hydrocracker bottoms at least one light fraction including diesel or jet fuel range material, thereby leaving a heavy fraction including the hydrocracker-derived, highly naphthenic, viscosity index mineral oil having a naphthenes content of at least about 33 wt. %. The lubricating composition has an unsheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 7.3 centistokes; a sheared kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of at least about 6.8 centistokes, where shear is measured by the 20-hour KRL method; and a Brookfield viscosity at -40.degree. C. of no greater than about 10,000 centipoise.
