Vibration damping composites suitable for use in construction panels or constrained-layer elements are described. The composites include a viscoelastic gel prepared from 99.5-92.5 wt. % water and 0.5-7.5 wt. % of a superabsorbent polymer. Preferably, the polymer is of the carboxylic acid type and optionally includes starch or cellulose.

Vibration damping superabsorbent composites

Polymer compositions are provided which are capable of being formed into shaped articles and comprise a poly(2-methylpentamethylene terephthalamide), also known as nylon M5T, and a minor amount of an ionomer, e.g., a partially neutralized copolymer of an alpha-olefin and an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. In particular, the compositions may be melt spun and drawn into filaments having good mechanical properties.

Organometallic preceramic polymers are melt spun into fibers utilizing a spinning apparatus which directs the preceramic polymer from a stagnant melt pool of said polymer to a spinneret. The spinneret is one used for solvent spinning and, thus, has a shorter residence time during extrusion through the spinneret orifice than conventional melt spinning spinnerets.
