A product and method for sealing cracks in pavements, roofs, or the like utilizes a can containing a tar sealant. The tar sealant is a solid at room temperature and assumes a fluid state pourable from the can when the tar sealant is heated in the can to a temperature above the melting temperature of the tar sealant. A spout and handle that can withstand the heat are fitted to the can for pouring the melted tar sealant in a fluid state from the can into a crack to be sealed.

The well-known, compliant sheet of material which is enwrapped about the juncture of structural units, to form a fluid barrier thereat, has its structure-adhering adhesive admixed with an insecticide or termiticide, to additionally form an insect barrier thereat as well. In an alternate embodiment the insecticide or termiticide is sprayed onto the adhesive.

Unbleached paper and paperboard for use as outer packaging material is coated and printed on a printing press. The unbleached rawstock must be relatively smooth and nonporous prior to coating and printing with a Sheffield roughness less than about 300 units for linerboard and less than about 330 units for folding carton material. The coating formulation preferably comprises a mixture of temperature insensitive binders and pigments having a viscosity lower than normal paper coatings, and is applied in layers of about 1.5 lb./1000 square feet up to a total of about 5 lb./1000 square feet. Best results are obtained when the coated surface is doctored with a blade or fixed roll after coating and before drying to achieve a smooth surface for printing on the same or a different press.

Method for making coated and printed packaging material on a printing

This process is directed to the coloration of envelope and stationery grades of white paper stocks with a water based ink coating. Characteristics of the flexographic process include both press and ink specifications. Critical mechanical or material characteristics are associated with each of the fountain roll, the anilox roll, the plate roll and the impression roll of a flexographic printing system. Used in conjunction with the critical combination of press characteristics is a unique, water-based ink formulation for rapidly coloring an entire web side with a colored ink to simulate the appearance of a colored paper stock.

Electrolytic capacitor cells of paste electrode type are formed integrally in a composite or laminated belt in a predetermined pattern and subsequently severed or otherwise separated therefrom to provide a plurality of individual cells or stacked cell sets of desired shape. The belt includes at least one inner sheet of ion conducting/electron insulating material, outer sheets of electron conducting material, and intermediate sheets of insulating gasket material respectively interposed between the inner sheet and respective outer sheets. Each intermediate sheet has a plurality of holes arranged in a predetermined pattern and aligned with the holes in the other intermediate sheet for accommodating respective electrodes of a like number of pairs which have opposite surfaces in operative contact with the inner and respective outer sheets. The belt is either continuously formed or formed in discrete lengths, and adjacent sheets thereof are either adhesively bonded as by double-sided adhesive tape or bonded by covulcanization.

A rotary converting machine gum box is replenished with adhesive by means of a pumped circulation system with a delivery conduit at one end of the gum box and a withdrawal conduit at the other end. Between the two gum box ends is provided a rotatively driven screw shaft to mechanically induce uniformly distributed adhesive flow from said one end to the other.

A rotary envelope machine gum box construction is taught which provides an independent frame assembly of the meter roll and gum pond elements. The independent frame is pivotally secured to the primary machine frame at one end of the independent frame with micro-adjusting jack screw abutments at the other independent frame end. Differential adjustment of the jack screws will skew the meter roll axis to the picker roll axis. The edge line of the doctor blade may be skewed relative to the meter roll surface by push/pull screws between the independent frame and the doctor blade ends. Liquid gum is pumped from a remote supply reservoir, the gum box pond level being controlled by a fiber optic liquid level sensor which regulates the gum pump operation. Gum is delivered from the pump to a removable manifold block which distributes the gum to the pond ends for a nonstagnation zone, end-to-middle pond flow pattern. The meter roll is provided with an auxiliary drive to permit continued roll rotation during periods of primary machine drive interruption. An actuator at the jack screw end of the frame lifts the meter roll off the picker at such times of primary drive interruption.

In a method for making a business reply envelope having binary bar code indicia imprinted thereon for identification or read-out by infrared scanning apparatus, the steps of providing a plurality of printing inks, each of said inks being of a color which in combination with the envelope substrate yields a Print Contrast Signal substantially less than 50 percent when measured in the wavelength range of 800 to 900 nanometers as determined by the equation Print Contrast Signal = Rw-Rb/Rw .times. 100 wherein Rw is the percentage reflectance of the unprinted substrate of the envelope and Rb is the percentage reflectance of the printed area of the envelope, adding a material comprising a metallic compound to only one of said inks in quantity sufficient to increase the Print Contrast Signal of said one ink color and said substrate to at least 50 percent, imprinting at least said indicia on said substrate with said one ink, and imprinting further material on said substrate with the other of said inks.
