The present invention relates to composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of single phase crosslinked low Tmicrospheres and film-forming polyurethane particles. The composition of the present invention is useful as a basecoat layer for a multilayered leather article.

The present invention provides aqueous flesh coating compositions comprising one or more aqueous acid-functional acrylic or vinyl copolymer and from 0.03 and up to 1.0 equivalent, based on equivalents of carboxylic acid in the polymer, of one or more active compound chosen from an aminoguanidine, semicarbazide, dihydrazide, guanamine, hydrazine and a salt thereof. Further, the invention provides methods of applying the coating composition to leather crust or to tanned leather, and to the flesh coated leather or coated leather crust produced thereby. The leather crust and tanned leather produced by the invention, for example fleshcoated or finished leather, will emit greatly reduced levels of aldehydes over time and especially valuable in scrubbing aldehydes from perforated leather for automotive use.

An aqueous leather coating composition having improved storage stability includes 1 to 40 weight percent of an emulsifiable polyisocyanate comprising the reaction product of an isocyanurate and an emulsifier, wherein the average isocyanate functionality of the emulsifiable polyisocyanate is 2 to 4.5; and 60 to 99 weight percent of an aqueous polymer dispersion having a Tof &#x2212;70 to 40&#xb0; C. and selected from a (meth)acrylic polymer dispersion, a polyurethane dispersion, a (meth)acrylic polymer/polyurethane hybrid dispersion and a combination comprising one or more of the foregoing aqueous polymer dispersions, wherein all weight percents are on a dry basis, and based on the total dry amount of the emulsifiable polyisocyanate and the aqueous polymer dispersion. Aqueous leather coating composition and method for coating leather

The present invention provides methods for reducing the level of free aldehydes in coatings for flexible substrates, such as tanned leather, and substantially aldehyde free substrates. The methods comprise applying to the substrate a composition of one or more aqueous emulsion or suspension composition of an acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer that is made from, or contains one or more lower alkyl alcohol or degrades on storage or in use to form such an alcohol, and one or more water-insoluble to slightly water soluble aldehyde scavenger compound, followed by drying or curing the applied composition to form a coating. In addition, the methods provide enhanced aldehyde scrubbing, especially for acetaldehyde, by applying to a substrate an aqueous acrylic polymer or silicon containing polymer emulsion or suspension comprising a aldehyde scavenger compound that is substantially deprotonated, i.e. by raising the pH composition to 5.5 or higher. The present invention also provides treated and coated substrates made by the inventive methods.

Aldehyde reduction in aqueous coating and leather finishing compositions

An aqueous silica dispersion containing silica particles dispersed in an aqueous medium is provided. The surfaces of the silica particles are treated with reacted aminosilane compound. The aqueous silica dispersion also contains anionic polymeric dispersing agent. The dispersion of the silica particles into an aqueous medium containing both anionic polymeric dispersing agent and aminosilane compound allows the preparation of aqueous silica dispersions at higher solids and/or low viscosities than aqueous silica dispersions that are prepared without either the anionic polymeric dispersing agent or the aminosilane compound. The aqueous silica dispersion is combinable with aqueous emulsion polymers to modify the physical or appearance properties of articles formed from the emulsion polymer.

The present invention provides aqueous matte coating compositions comprising a binder component B) and a polymeric duller component A) composed of particles of one or more multi-stage copolymer or single stage crosslinked (co)polymer, e.g. crosslinked t-butyl (meth)acrylate, the duller component particles A) having an average diameter of 1-20 &#x3bc;m. Components A) and B) are compatible. Preferably, the duller component A) is acrylic; more preferably, components A) and B) are acrylic. The aqueous compositions provide matte coatings having haptic or feel (soft touch) properties, film and appearance properties, including burnish resistance and low color loss.

An aqueous polymeric composition containing select polymeric nanoparticles is provided. The select polymeric nanoparticles contain as polymerized units at least one multiethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one water soluble monomer; and have a mean diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers. Also provided are aqueous polymeric compositions that further contain second particles such as pigment particles or second polymer particles. The aqueous polymeric composition is useful for preparing coatings having at least one improved property compared to a coating absent the select polymeric nanoparticles. Further, the aqueous polymeric composition is useful for treating wood. A coating prepared from the aqueous polymeric composition is also provided.
