Systems and methods of reducing drag on outer surfaces of vehicles that are in contact with water using a polymer solution that reduces the drag on the outer surfaces of the vehicles as the vehicles travel through water. A polymer solution is passively ejected into the boundary layer of the water flowing past the outer surface of the vehicle. The polymer solution is mixed and introduced into the boundary layer passively with minimal or no usage of electrical energy. The passive mixing and ejection of the polymer solution minimizes energy consumption, thereby maximizing electrical energy consumption efficiency during operation of the vehicle.

Polymer drag reduction systems on vehicle surfaces

An embodiment of an apparatus includes a transducer array and a controller that is operable to cause the transducer array to generate a signal having a frequency, and to direct the signal toward an object having a resonant frequency that is approximately equal to the frequency of the signal. For example, an embodiment of a mine-hunting-and-neutralizing apparatus may generate an acoustic wave with a transducer array, and may disable or destroy a mine by directing the wave toward the mine. The apparatus generates the acoustic wave having a frequency that is approximately equal to the natural frequency of a component of the mine such that the wave causes the component to resonate in a manner that is sufficient to disable the mine from detonating, or that is sufficient to cause the mine to detonate. For example, if the component is the detonator, then the wave causes the detonator to resonate at an energy level that is sufficient to render the detonator unable to detonate the mine, or that is sufficient to cause the detonator to detonate the mine.

Neutralization of a target with an acoustic wave

A mine neutralizing device that includes a buoy. The buoy includes a mine neutralizing device capable of swimming to an undersea mine to neutralize it. A method for neutralizing undersea mines includes locating an undersea mine, placing a buoy containing a mine neutralizer near the mine, and swimming the mine neutralizer to the undersea mine.

Apparatus and method for neutralizing underwater mines

Utilizing a sonar system to determine if a structural member of an underwater support structure that is supposed to be filled with air is instead flooded with water. The determination that a supposedly air filled structural member is instead flooded with water provides an indication that the structural member is cracked or damaged, making it easier to find damaged members and effect suitable repair. The sonar system is located a distance from the structural member so that it is spaced from the structural member.

Remote flooded member detection

A system for measuring acoustic signature of a target object in water includes a plurality of rigid segments connected to each other to form a longitudinal member and a plurality of floats connected to the longitudinal member. Two buoys are connected at two ends of the longitudinal member and two weights are suspended from the buoys, thus making the longitudinal member neutrally buoyant when suspended in water. A plurality of hydrophones and an acoustic projector of a known source level are connected to the longitudinal member. The system further includes a data acquisition system for receiving signals from hydrophones and a signal processing means for processing signals received by data acquisition and determining acoustic signature of the target object. A depth/pressure sensor may be included. A pinger is located on the target object to measure range of target object to hydrophones. Range to target object is displayed in real time.

System for measuring acoustic signature of an object in water

A sound absorbing hollow core panel of structural material based on Helmholtz resonator properties consisting of two exterior skins connected by spacers or structural connections and bounded by perimeter skins or structural connections with internal cavity or cavities that communicate with the exterior sound field through a plurality of orifices in one or both exterior skins as well as the perimeter of the panel and that have a plurality of Helmoltz resonators of different shapes and sizes tuned to specific frequencies that control the sound absorption characteristics of the hollow core panel. The internal cavity or cavities are defined by external skins and perimeters as well as internal structural elements acting as interior dividers, interior sub-volumes and perimeter structures, each of which may contain a plurality of orifices for sound communication forming a sequence of first order Helmholtz acoustical resonators with respective natural frequencies for sound absorption. Panels may be assembled with or without selected interior elements or perimeter structures as a basis for infinite flexibility in building sound absorbing walls of selectable sound absorbing characteristics and size. The numbers and geometries of the orifices as well as the sizes of the internal cavities may be varied generally, thus adding to the flexibility of the invention. Sound dissipating material may also be incorporated in the cavities of the panel.
