A lift system for a rotor blade of a wind turbine includes a lifting device having a structural frame body having a root end and a tip end. The root end supports a root cradle and the tip end supports a tip cradle. The root and tip cradles each have a profile that corresponds to at least one exterior surface of the rotor blade so as to receive and support at least a portion of the rotor blade. Due to a shape of the rotor blade, when the rotor blade is installed in the lifting device and lifted uptower, the rotor blade can experience an asymmetric loading. Accordingly, the lift system also includes a variable airflow assembly coupled to tip end of the lifting device. The variable airflow assembly includes at least one surface moveable between a plurality of positions having varying resistances so as to counteract the asymmetric loading.

Lifting device for a wind turbine rotor blade

A system and method are provided for controlling a wind turbine of a wind farm. Accordingly, a controller prepares a yaw bias correction function based, at least in part, on a yaw offset function, and on wind speed measurement data and wind direction reference data of a wind event acting on at least a portion of the wind farm. The controller also applies the yaw bias correction function based at least in part on position data of a nacelle of the wind turbine, to yaw the nacelle of the wind turbine.

A system and method are provided for operating a power generating asset having a generator operably coupled to a power grid. The generator having a rotor and a stator. The stator being operably coupled to a transformer, and ultimately to the power grid, via a sync-switch assembly. The sync-switch assembly having a plurality of switching devices electrically coupled in parallel. Accordingly, a controller detects an approach of at least one operating parameter of the power generating asset to a first parameter threshold. In response to detecting the approach of the operating parameter to the first parameter threshold, the controller independently changes an operating state of a first switching device of the plurality of switching devices of the sync-switch assembly. Each switching device of the plurality of switching devices is independently controllable via the controller.

A method for refurbishing a wind turbine includes terminating use of an existing uptower electrical system of the wind turbine. The method also includes installing a new uptower electrical system for the wind turbine at an uptower location of the wind turbine. Further, the method includes providing an electrical adaptor at an uptower location for connecting the new uptower electrical system with an existing downtower electrical system. Moreover, the method includes electrically connecting the electrical adaptor between the existing downtower electrical system and the new uptower electrical system.

The present disclosure is directed to a wind turbine. The wind turbine includes a tower, a machine head having a generator, and a rotor mechanically coupled to the generator. The rotor includes a hub and a plurality of rotor blades coupled to and extending outwardly from the hub. The wind turbine also includes an adaptor coupled between the tower and the machine head, with the adaptor defining an interior chamber. Furthermore, the wind turbine includes one or more electrical components electrically coupled to the generator, with the one or more electrical components being positioned within the interior chamber defined by the adaptor.

A trip reduction tool for a wind turbine power system includes a capacitor assembly configured to provide multiple capacitance levels for the power system, including e.g. a first level of capacitance during a learning phase of the tool. The tool also includes one or more processors communicatively coupled to the capacitor assembly that is configured to monitor a plurality of electrical devices of the power system for trips during the learning phase. When a trip is detected, the processor(s) collects data and determines a location of the trip. When the location of the trip is located in an electrical device that corresponds to a weak link of the power system, the processor(s) determines a second level of capacitance for the power system based on the collected data. In addition, the processor(s) provides the second level of capacitance at the weak link of the power system to reduce future trips of the electrical device.

The present subject matter is directed to a system and method for improving speed control of a pitch drive system of a wind turbine. In one embodiment, the pitch drive system includes a direct current (DC) motor having an armature and a series-field winding, a battery assembly having a positive terminal and a negative terminal, and a current-controlling device configured in series between the positive terminal of the battery assembly and the series-field winding. The battery assembly is configured to supply power to the pitch drive system and the current-controlling device is configured to supply current to the series-field winding so as to ensure a field flux does not equal zero. Thus, the current-controlling device has the effect of limiting the maximum speed of the DC motor.

A system for controlling a wind turbine may include at least one sensor configured to provide at least one of a wind speed signal or a wind direction signal and a turbine controller configured to control the operation of the wind turbine. The system may also include a secondary controller inserted between the sensor(s) and the turbine controller. The secondary controller may be separated from the turbine controller by a distance and may be configured to receive the wind speed signal and/or the wind direction signal from the sensor(s) over a communication interface. In addition, the secondary controller may be configured to adjust the wind speed signal and/or wind direction signal based at least in part on a signal bias value(s) to an adjusted signal(s) and to provide the adjusted signal(s) to the turbine controller.

A signal path between a sensor and a turbine controller can be modified and a secondary controller can be inserted between the turbine controller and the sensor. The adjusted signal can be communicated to the turbine controller which can control operation of the wind turbine based at least in part on the adjusted signal. The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for controlling and/or upgrading aftermarket multivendor wind turbines. The system includes a turbine controller configured to control operations of the wind turbine, a safety device configured to provide a signal indicative of a health status of the safety device, and a secondary controller inserted between the safety device and the turbine controller. The secondary controller is configured to receive the signal from the safety device over a communication interface. As such, if the signal indicates a normal health status, the secondary controller is configured to send the signal to the turbine controller, i.e. maintain normal operation. Alternatively, if the signal indicates a poor health status, the secondary controller is configured to adjust the signal based at least in part on a signal bias to an adjusted signal and to provide the adjusted signal to the turbine controller.

Systems and methods for controlling the pitch angle of rotor blades in a wind turbine are provided. A signal path between a turbine controller and a pitch of a wind turbine can be broken r modified and a secondary controller can be inserted between the turbine controller and the pitch system. The secondary controller can receive a pitch angle setpoint from the turbine controller and adjust the pitch angle setpoint to an adjusted pitch angle setpoint. The adjusted pitch angle setpoint can be communicated to the pitch system. In this way, the pitch angle setpoints for the wind turbine can be adjusted to provide for increased energy production without requiring access to computer-readable instructions, such as source code, implemented by the wind turbine controller.

A system and method for preventing a rotor blade from striking a tower of the wind turbine is disclosed. The system includes a pitch adjustment mechanism, at least one electrical switch, and a mechanically-actuated positional switch. The pitch adjustment mechanism is configured to rotate the rotor blade about a pitch axis. Further, the pitch adjustment mechanism includes a motor and a brake. The electrical switch is configured with the motor, the brake, or both. The mechanically-actuated positional switch is fixed within a hub of the wind turbine. Further, the positional switch is configured with the electrical switch such that if the rotor blade rotates to an unsafe region, the positional switch is configured to trigger the electrical switch to implement one of tripping power to the motor of the pitch adjustment mechanism or actuating the brake of the pitch adjustment mechanism.

System and method for preventing rotor blade tower strike

The present disclosure is directed to a lightning protection system for a wind turbine rotor blade. The lightning protection system includes a lightning conductive circuit having at least one electrical conductor and at least one semiconductor. The semiconductor is configured for placement at a blade root of the rotor blade. Further, the electrical conductor is configured to electrically couple a blade tip of the rotor blade to a ground conductor. In addition, the electrical conductor is configured to electrically couple the semiconductor between one or more spar caps located on either or both of the pressure or suction sides at the blade root and the ground conductor.

Lightning protection system for wind turbine rotor blades

A ventilation arrangement for a wind turbine includes a manhole cover for covering a manhole of a rotor hub. The rotor hub is contained within the nose cone and spaced therefrom to form an internal space between an inner surface of the nose cone and an outer surface of the rotor hub. The manhole cover provides a vent opening for venting hot air from an interior space of the rotor hub into the internal space. A pipe extends from a forward internal space through the manhole cover and into the rotor hub. The pipe establishes fluid communication between the forward internal space and the interior space. A fan is mounted to the pipe, and draws air from the forward internal space. An exhaust, fluidly connected with the pipe, is located in the rotor hub and away from the manhole cover by 50% to 90% of a rotor hub axial length.
