An insect decoder and communicator, comprising a user input interface, a microcontroller, a power source, a non-user input, an output interface, and a communication interface to communicate with external devices, where the user input interface, microcontroller, power source, non-user input, output interface, and communication interface are electronically connected, a preset pattern of insect communication from an external device loaded into the microcontroller through the communication interface and stored into memory, and the non-user input connected to the microcontroller and causing the microcontroller to modify the frequency of the preset patterns of insect communication produced by the output interface to accurately emulate patterns of insect communications affected by ambient temperature.

A high alumina refractory and its preparation are disclosed. In addition to the mix of alumina particles providing an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 content of at least 50%, by weight, there is included metallic carbide particles, having a critically-selected particle size distribution, in an amount between about 3 and about 25%, by weight, based on the total dry weight at the mixture. Other forms of carbon, like tar, pitch and graphite are omitted. The product is free from black core and has improved resistance to molten slags and metals.

A refractory slide gate for a container dispensing molten material is comprised of a metal-supporting can filled with a low-fired coherent bonded refractory. The refractory is formed into a coherent refractory body within the metal supporting can and is directly affixed thereto, without the use of refractory mortar. An orifice through the refractory controls the flow of molten material.

Method of manufacturing a slide gate

An improved crutch made up of three sections which quickly assemble and disassemble and adjust handle height using no nuts and bolts. The middle portion between the upper underarm support and the lower ground contact portions, has a pair of cross bars, the upper movable one of which is the handle. A pair of spring-loaded telescoping members mounts the handle on the lower fixed cross bar. Manipulation of the handle and the telescoping members permits one or both of handle height adjustment and/or assembly or disassembly in a single operation.

Improved carbon-containing, chemically bonded, refractory compositions, usually magnesia or alumina base, including about 1% to 20% by weight carbon and about 0.5% to 10% by weight steel fibers, low carbon steel fibers, or stainless steel fibers of about 10-50 mm in length and about 0.1 mm to about 1.0 mm in diameter of any cross-sectional shape distributed in the carbon-bearing matrix and bonded thereto. Other fibers compatible with both the intended application and the base composition may also be used.

Refractory compositions

This invention provides improved high fired direct bonded basic magnesite-chrome refractory shapes, such as brick, characterized by the presence of chromium enriched spinel structures distributed in the matrix and bonding the individual periclase crystals. The shapes are thermally stable and resistant to slag penetration and erosion and enjoy improved service life in industrial furnace linings. Also provided is a method of making the improved refractory shapes which comprises forming a mixture of (1) from about 40% to about 75% by weight high purity magnesite, (2) from about 25% to about 60% by weight chrome ore and (3) from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight chromic oxide powder; pressing the mixture into a refractory shape; and firing the refractory shape to a temperature of at least 1700.degree. C.
