According to some embodiments, a railcar comprises an underframe and at least one hopper. The hopper is configured to transport a lading material. A longitudinal sliding gate assembly is coupled to the hopper and comprises: a pair of side walls coupled to a pair of end walls forming a discharge opening; a pair of tracks, one coupled to each end wall; a sliding gate slidably coupled to the pair of tracks; and a threaded drive screw coupled to the sliding gate and to the pair of side walls. Rotation of the threaded drive screw in a first direction moves the sliding gate along the tracks to an open position that permits the lading material to discharge, and rotation of the threaded drive screw in an opposite direction moves the sliding gate along the tracks to a closed position that restricts the lading material from discharging.

A railcar coupler includes a coupler head portion extending from a shank portion. The coupler head portion is configured to couple to a first coupler knuckle for coupling the railcar coupler to a second railcar coupler of an adjacent railcar. The coupler head portion comprises a nose portion and a gathering face extending from the nose portion for engaging a second coupler knuckle coupled to the second railcar coupler. The coupler head portion comprises a guard arm portion extending from the nose portion towards the shank portion. The coupler head portion comprises a horn portion having a back surface. A distance between the back surface of the horn portion and a nose end of the guard arm portion is less than 11 inches. The coupler head portion comprises a locklifter shelf less than 2 inches above a bottom edge of the coupler.

A method for manufacturing railcar coupler headcores includes providing a first corebox having internal walls defining at least in part perimeter boundaries of at least one rotor core cavity. The method further comprises at least partially filling the at least one rotor core cavity with a first sand resin to form at least one rotor core. The method also includes providing a second corebox having internal walls defining at least in part perimeter boundaries of at least one headcore cavity. The at least one rotor core is positioned within the second corebox. The method also comprises at least partially filling the at least one headcore cavity with a second sand resin to form at least one headcore.

System and method for manufacturing railcar coupler headcores

A railway car coupler system includes a railcar coupler comprising a coupler head portion extending from a shank portion. The coupler head portion is configured to couple to a first coupler knuckle for coupling the railcar coupler to a second railcar coupler of an adjacent railcar. The coupler head portion comprises a coupler pivot pin hole for receiving a pivot pin for coupling the railcar coupler to the first coupler knuckle. The pivot pin hole has a longitudinal axis. The coupler head portion comprises top and bottom coupler pulling lugs each having a respective coupler pulling lug engagement face. At least one of the coupler pulling lug engagement faces of the top and bottom coupler pulling lugs is angled with respect to the longitudinal axis.

A railcar coupler system that includes a yoke comprising a front end, a rear end, a top strap, and a bottom strap. The top strap and the bottom strap are positioned between the front end and the rear end. The front end comprises an internal bearing surface that is obliquely angled with respect to a central axis of the yoke that extends from the front end to the rear end of the yoke. The system also includes a connector configured to rotate within the yoke such that an axis of rotation of the connector is substantially aligned with the central axis of the yoke when the connector is positioned within the yoke. The connector includes an external bearing surface that is obliquely angled with respect to the axis of rotation of the connector and configured to correspond to the internal bearing surface of the yoke.

The coupler head portion is configured to couple to a first coupler knuckle for coupling the railcar coupler to a second railcar coupler of an adjacent railcar. The coupler head portion comprises a nose portion and a gathering face extending from the nose portion for engaging a second coupler knuckle coupled to the second railcar coupler. The coupler head portion comprises a guard arm portion extending from the nose portion towards the shank portion. The guard arm portion comprises a minimum height less than a height of the shank portion where the guard arm portion meets the shank portion.

A method for manufacturing a railcar coupler knuckle includes providing a cope mold portion and a drag mold portion. The cope and drag mold portions have internal walls defining at least in part perimeter boundaries of a coupler knuckle mold cavity. The method includes positioning one or two internal cores within either the cope mold portion or the drag mold portion. The one or two internal cores are configured to define a kidney cavity, a finger cavity and a pivot pin cavity of a coupler knuckle. The method includes closing the cope and drag mold portions with the one or two internal cores therebetween and at least partially filling the mold cavity with a molten alloy, the molten alloy solidifying after filling to form the coupler knuckle.

Method and system for manufacturing a coupler knuckle

A railroad car ( ) uses a coupling system ( ) to couple to other railroad cars. The coupling system includes a coupler ( ), a knuckle ( ), a knuckle pin ( ) and a lock ( ). When two railroad cars are coupled to each other, the knuckles of the two railroad cars are engaged and the forces produced during buff and draft movement of the railroad cars are transmitted through the knuckles, the coupler and the locks. Under normal operation, the knuckle pin should experience minimal forces during the buff and draft movement of the railroad cars. However, over time the various components that make up the coupler system may fall out of tolerance due to usage, wear and other factors. As the various components of the coupler system fall out of tolerance, increasing bending forces are applied to the knuckle pin. A knuckle pin with a slot ( ) and a hollow body ( ) is capable of withstanding bending forces applied to the knuckle pin by out-of-tolerance coupling systems.

A Type E railway freight car coupler having an expanded gathering range is achieved by attaching or forming an extension wing extending diagonally outward from an outer end of the gathering arm to thereby provide an extension to the angled gathering surface. The extension wing can either be cast as one piece directly with the coupler, or cast separately and welded onto the coupler.

An elongated light-weight, cast draft sill mountable at the end of a center sill of a railway car body, and to which a railway car truck is pivotally mountable, the cast draft sill having a generally hollow, elongated rectangular body, with a pair of elongated, parallel side walls extending perpendicularly from an elongated top wall and further including a draft pocket adjacent to the forward end adapted to receive a coupler yoke and associated draft gear, and a light weight center plate portion which is mateable to a railway car truck spaced from the rearward end of the cast draft sill. The unique center plate portion comprising a generally cubic center plate pocket defined between a pair of spaced and parallel center plate pocket end walls, extending perpendicularly between the parallel side walls of said draft sill, and a floor wall member forming a lower wall of the center plate pocket having a cylindrical periphery extending downwardly from an underside of the draft sill, and having a circular outer face with an aperture axially disposed through the circular outer face to receive a king-pin of the railway car truck.

A non-binding, slack-adjusting, gravity wedge member for use in a railway slackless drawbar system, the wedge member having a pair of opposed friction faces at an inclined angle to each other, with a first of the faces having at least one recess therein adapted to receive an elastomeric body bonded therein such that an outer, flat surface of the elastomeric body is exposed and spaced outwardly from and parallel to the first face, such that the elastomeric body has an exposed outer flat surface of at least about 35 square inches, and a hardness of at least about 50 durometers.
