Artificial turf filaments formed from polyethylene are provided that can have desirable properties. In one aspect, an artificial turf filament comprises a composition comprising a first composition, wherein the first composition comprises at least one ethylene-based polymer and wherein the first composition comprises a MWCDI value greater than 0.9, and a melt index ratio (I10/I2) that meets the following equation: I10/I2&#x2265;7.0&#x2212;1.2&#xd7;log (I2).

A microporous film comprising: 75 wt. % or greater of a high density polyethylene resin having a density of 0.957 g/cc-0.970 g/cc, a melt index of from 0.2 to 10 g/10 minutes, a molecular weight distribution, M/M, of greater than or equal to 6.0, and a Mof greater than or equal to 500,000 g/mol, wherein the microporous film is oriented in the machine direction and exhibits a normalized water vapor transmission rate greater than 50 g mil/(100 in&#xb7;day).

The hydration of clays and shale in drilling operations may be inhibited by employing an aqueous based drilling fluid comprising a shale hydration inhibition agent having the formula: (I), R is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbons; Rmay be the same or different than R and is an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbons or a hydroxy alkyl group comprising n number of carbons wherein n is an integer from 1 to 10 and n&#x2212;1 hydroxyl groups; Ris an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbons; Rmay be the same or different than Rand is an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbons or a hydroxy alkyl group comprising n number of carbons wherein n is an integer from 1 to 10 and n&#x2212;1 hydroxyl groups, with the proviso that Ris not the same as R; and X is an anion. The shale hydration inhibition agent should be present in the aqueous based drilling fluid in sufficient concentration to reduce the reactivity, such as swelling, of clays and shale when exposed to water-based drilling fluids.
