Mild toilet bar compositions are described that contain harsh to the skin cleansing components, such as soap, and a latent acidifier. The latent acidifier reduces the pH of the toilet bar when used for cleansing but does not substantially affect the hardness of the toilet bar.

A bar composition comprising about 50-80% soap, about 4 to 35% by wt. free fatty acid and less than about 4% synthetic surfactant. Addition of 1% to 10% organic salt has been found to allow use of little or no surfactant while maintaining consumer desirable properties.

A batch and continuous process is disclosed for the production of a composition comprising alkali metal salts of C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 alkyl fatty monocarboxylic acid and C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 acyl isethionate in a ratio of 20:1 to 1:0.98. Both batch and continuous routes require that the saponifying aqueous caustic solution includes sodium hydroxide and sodium isethionate maintained as a hot solution at a temperature of from 180.degree. F. to about 200.degree. F. For the batch route, the sequence of steps require the caustic solution to be added slowly to the fatty acid. In the continuous process, it is advantageous to introduce fatty acid upstream from the point where the caustic solution stream enters the mixing chamber.

Process for preparing soap-acyl isethionate compositions

A skin cleansing composition is provided that includes a combination of C.sub.16 -C.sub.18 acyl isethionate ester salts having no more than 25% C.sub.14 or lower acyl groups with at least one co-active surfactant. The weight ratio of acyl isethionate to co-active will range from about 20:1 to about 1:1. Soap is present in an amount no higher than 10% by weight of the composition.
