The invention relates to an apparatus (70) and method for removing particles from an interior of a CRT envelope (12). The CRT envelope includes a faceplate panel (14), with a color selection electrode assembly (30) detachably mounted therein, sealed to a funnel (18). The apparatus comprises a plurality of thumper mechanisms (84, 184 and 284) for imparting asynchronous vibrations to the funnel of the envelope while the interior of the funnel is flushed with a suitable fluid. The embodiment further includes a plurality of vibrators (51) for imparting asynchronous vibrations to the color selection electrode assembly to remove particles therefrom, before the color selection electrode assembly is mounted into the panel and sealed to the funnel. A method for removing particles using the apparatus also is described.

Cathode-ray tube particle removal apparatus and method

A noise-reducing foam member for prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation without degradation consists essentially of a major proportion of a room-temperature silicone rubber foaming material and minor proportions of a room-temperature foaming curing agent and at least two and preferably three ultraviolet stabilizing materials selected from the group consisting of carbon black, cerium oxide, 2(2'-hydroxy-3',5'-di-tert-amylphenyl) benzotriazole and zinc oxide. The foam member is made by mixing together suitable quantities of the silicone rubber foaming material, the ultraviolet stabilizing materials and the curing agent. The mixture is then cured to provide the foam member.

Method comprises positioning a transparent safety panel in close spaced-apart relationship with the viewing window of a CRT and producing a mechanically-strong, hydraulically-tight closure between the panel and window around the margins thereof. A viewing-screen structure comprising a light-reflective aluminum metal layer having a carbon-particle layer thereon may be made by: (a) depositing on the metal layer a coating of organic, volatilizable, film-forming material, (b) depositing on the coated metal layer an over-coating of carbon particles that is substantially free from substances which, when incinerated, produce metal-ion-containing residues and (c) then baking the screen and support in air at about 400.degree. to 450.degree. C to remove organic and volatile matter.

In the method of making a cathode-ray tube comprising a luminescent-viewing-screen structure including an aluminum metal layer in contact with a layer of carbon particles, the steps soon after the faceplate panel is heat sealed to the funnel, of flushing the still-hot assembly with a dry noncontaminating gas, such as nitrogen or air, then cooling the assembly to room temperature and then reflushing the assembly with a dry noncontaminating gas, and then capping the assembly with a temporary closure. The assembly so conditioned can be held or stored for a relatively long term between the heat sealing step and the subsequent manufacturing steps without degradation of the conductivity or reflectivity of the aluminum metal layer.
