A rotary electrical device has a rotor body for receiving an inner retaining ring. A primary retaining ring is formed of a composite of epoxy and graphite fibers and has an integrally embedded auxiliary ring at one end thereof adjacent its open end. The auxiliary ring and inner retaining ring have complementary tapered surfaces with axially spaced, circumferentially extending seals therebetween. The inner retaining ring has fluid lines for receiving fluid under high pressure to facilitate axial assembly and a disassembly of the retaining ring relative to the rotor body. The retaining ring has a corrugated spring to accommodate differential expansion of the end windings of the electrical device and the composite retaining ring. A short-circuiting ring is at the inside diameter of the primary retaining ring. A corrugated spring is interposed between the primary retaining ring and the short-circuiting ring.

End retainer ring assembly for rotary electrical devices

A retaining ring system for a rotating electrical device such as a generator, motor, or condenser, including an auxiliary ring adapted to be removably mounted around the end portion of the rotor of the rotating electrical device bridging the rotor winding slots, and a retaining ring removably mounted around the first ring. The retaining ring supports the amortisseur and the field end windings of the rotating electrical device. An external first taper defined by the auxiliary ring and an internal second taper defined by the retaining ring provide mating, continuous first and second tapered surfaces. The assembly process is begun by sliding or jacking the auxiliary ring onto the rotor. A high pressure feed fluid line defined in the auxiliary ring includes an inlet port and an outlet port opening at a circumferential groove between the mating first and second tapered surfaces between O-ring seals. For either assembly or disassembly, a source of high pressure fluid is connected to the inlet port of the feed fluid line and a high pressure fluid is sent between the first and second tapered surfaces sufficient to decrease the diametrical dimension of the first tapered surface of the auxiliary ring and to increase the diametrical dimensions of the second tapered surface of the retaining ring and thus to separate the auxiliary ring from the retaining ring devoid of the application of heat and also thus to allow either the mounting of the retaining ring to the auxiliary ring devoid of the application of heat or the disassembly of the retaining ring from the rotor devoid of the application of heat. Application of mechanical force to the retaining ring is combined with the application of high pressure oil during the assembly or disassembly process.

Method of assembling and disassembling a rotor retaining ring system

A retaining ring system for a rotating electrical device such as a generator, motor, or condenser, including an auxiliary ring adapted to be removably mounted around the end portion of the rotor of the rotating electrical device bridging the rotor winding slots, and a retaining ring removably mounted around the first ring. The retaining ring supports the amortisseur and the field end windings of the rotating electrical device. An external first taper defined by the auxiliary ring and an internal second taper defined by the retaining ring provide mating, continuous first and second tapered surfaces. For either assembly or disassembly, a high pressure fluid is sent between the first and second tapered surfaces sufficient to decrease the diametrical dimension of the first tapered surface of the auxiliary ring and to increase the diametrical dimensions of the second tapered surface of the retaining ring and thus to separate the auxiliary ring from the retaining ring devoid of the application of heat and also thus to allow either the mounting of the retaining ring to the auxiliary ring devoid of the application of heat or the disassembly of the retaining ring from the rotor devoid of the application of heat.

Rotor retaining ring system

This invention provides apparatus for reinforcing an end of a motor housing of a motor of the type having a minimum vertical dimension. The invention accomplishes this objective in one embodiment by extending two axially extending gussets, which normally terminate short of the ends of the stator housing, until they contact inside surfaces of the ends of the stator housing. A stiffening bar is added along the bottom of the ends of the stator housing between the two extended gussets to carry downward vibration forces from the rotor bearings of the motor through the end shields to mounting rails located adjacent the gussets. This improvement reduces vibration and shifts the natural vibrational resonant frequencies of the structure further away from expected vibrational excitation frequencies of the motor. In another embodiment of the invention the end shield of the motor is provided with force transmission members disposed diagonally downwardly to a pair of mounting flange members which are engaged, upon assembly of the end shield into the housing with a pair of diagonally disposed gussets which are fastened directly to a pair of motor mounting rails, thus bypassing the motor housing in the path of support for dynamic forces generated during operation of the motor.
