A method of testing for leaks in a closed fluid filled system and a system tested by such method are provided, the method comprising the steps of disposing the system in a chamber, disposing a fluid in the chamber under a pressure so that if a leak path of a certain size or larger exists in the system such fluid of the chamber will be forced through the leak path to change the fluid condition in the closed volume of the system, removing the system from the chamber after a certain period of time, then subjecting the system to a certain pressure and temperature condition so that an expandable part of the system will be in an adverse expanded position beyond its normal position for that certain pressure and temperature if the leak path of at least a certain size existed, and then detecting the adverse expanded position of the part of the system.

A propellant storage construction having a chamber for storing the propellant and a passage leading to the chamber and containing a valve unit therein for opening and closing the passage, the passage having a flow restricting unit therein intermediate the valve unit and the chamber to limit the flow rate of the propellant from the chamber through the valve unit to a certain low flow rate when the valve unit is in an open position to dispense the propellant. Propellant storage construction, parts therefor and methods of making

A propellant storage construction having a storing chamber for storing the propellant and a passage leading to the storing chamber and containing a valve unit therein for opening and closing the passage. The construction has a pressure regulator operatively associated with the valve unit for operating the valve unit in relation to the pressure of the propellant, the pressure regulator comprising a self-contained capsule having a movable wall for engaging the valve unit and an opposed wall spaced therefrom by a side wall. The construction has a wall cooperating with the capsule to define an output chamber for receiving propellant dispensed from the storing chamber through the valve unit. An annular sealing member is disposed between and against the capsule and the wall to define the output chamber therebetween. The annular sealing member is telescoped onto the side wall of the capsule and thereby engages and seals against the side wall of the capsule intermediate the opposed wall and the movable wall of the capsule.

A propellant charging head for filling a storing chamber of a propellant storage construction with a charge of propellant and method of making the charging head are provided, the head being adapted to be disposed against the construction and have a projection of the head engage a valve plunger of a valve unit disposed in the passage of the propellant storage construction so that propellant can flow from the head through the open valve unit to the chamber, the head having a generally conical nose-like member that is adapted to seat against a generally conical seat of the construction to fluidly interconnect the head to the passage.

A propellant storage construction having a chamber for storing propellant and a passage leading to the chamber and containing a valve unit therein for opening and closing the passage, the construction having a removable pressure regulator unit interconnected thereto and being operatively associated with the valve unit for operating the valve unit in relation to the pressure of the propellant having passed through the valve unit. One of the passage and the pressure regulator unit defines a generally conical seat adjacent the valve unit and on the side thereof opposite to the chamber and the other of the passage and the pressure regulator unit having a generally conical nose-like member seated in the seat to fluidly interconnect the pressure regulator unit to the passage downstream from the valve unit.

The combination of a propellant storage construction and an outlet coupling member detachably interconnected to an outlet of the construction for dispensing propellant from the construction, the outlet comprising a locking surface and an outlet passage in the construction and having a valve unit therein that requires a plunger thereof to be axially moved inwardly in the unit to open the unit so that propellant can be dispensed through the outlet passage to the outlet coupling member when the outlet coupling member is disposed in the outlet passage and engages and holds the plunger in its inward position while interlocking with the locking surface. The outlet passage has a substantially cylindrical section and a frusto-conical mouth-like section intermediate the cylindrical section and the locking surface, the outlet coupling member having a substantially flat end surface spanning the outlet passage and engaging the plunger and the end surface having an opening therein disposed outboard of the plunger for receiving the propellant that passes through the open valve unit. The outlet coupling member has a substantially cylindrical body portion provided with opposed ends and an annular groove intermediate the opposed ends thereof. One of the opposed ends of the body portion defines the end surface thereof. The body portion carries an annular sealing ring in the annular groove thereof that seals with the outlet passage outboard of the valve unit.
