A device may determine at least one metric related to a plurality of laser pulses associated with a Q-switched laser. The device may determine a statistical metric for the at least one metric related to the plurality of laser pulses. The device may determine that the statistical metric satisfies a threshold level of deviation of the at least one metric related to the plurality of laser pulses from a baseline value for the at least one metric. The device may indicate laser degradation of the Q-switched laser based on determining that the statistical metric satisfies the threshold.

A power control method for a laser system comprising laser diodes arranged in diode banks is provided. Each diode bank comprises at least one of the laser diodes and has a maximum power. The method comprises operating a first diode bank of the diode banks to output a first power; and concurrently operating other of the diode banks to output other powers, at least one of the other powers being different than the first power.

A heterodyne modulated optical signal that includes two or more beat notes is produced. A portion of the heterodyne modulated optical signal is coupled to a device under test (DUT). This portion includes modulation at least at two of the beat note frequencies. The output of the DUT includes signals corresponding to two of the beat notes. These signals are mixed to produce a mixed output signal having the same frequency as an additional beat note but a phase that depends on the phase response of the DUT at one or more of the two beat note frequencies. The phase of the mixed output signal is measured with respect to a reference signal having the same frequency and a known phase with respect to the additional beat note. The resulting phase measurement represents the dispersion of the DUT with respect to modulation frequency.

A stabilized solid-state laser in a thermal imaging system in which a laser diode pumps the solid-state laser and a modulator modulates the laser beam according to graphical data to be recorded in a thermally sensitive medium, as is used in the graphics industry. The solid-state laser is stabilized against relaxation oscillations induced in the laser by modulated light reflected back from the thermally sensitive medium. The light reflected from the medium is allowed to reenter the solid-state laser, but the optical output of the solid-state laser is sampled in the frequency band in which relaxation oscillations occur. The detected intensity is then used in a feedback circuit to control the intensity of the diode laser that is optically pumping the solid-state laser. Thereby, the data modulation does not cause the solid-state laser to oscillate, and neither a Faraday rotator nor use of a diffracted beam is required.
