Apparatus and methods are disclosed which are capable of being used to determine filtration efficiency of a filter body even in a clean state. Methods of determining a filtration efficiency of a filter including forcing an inlet flow comprised of a gas (such as air) flow into the inlet end of the filter at a set flow rate, introducing particles such as smoke particles into the inlet flow, and optically counting the number of particles entering and exiting the filter during a sampling event, such as with diffraction based optical particle counters positioned upstream and downstream of the filter. Preferably the gas flow is a soot-free flow stream which does not load the honeycomb filter body with contaminants that need to be removed or burned out. The filter body can thus remain in an essentially clean state even after testing its filtration efficiency.

Offline measurement of honeycomb body filtration efficiency

Improved inspection techniques are described herein for identifying leaks in a plugged honeycomb body. The improved inspection techniques utilize a pore impediment and a test gas. The pore impediment is injected into the plugged honeycomb body, and the test gas is forced into the plugged honeycomb body. A thermal detector is used to collect thermal data from an inspection region of an outlet end of the plugged honeycomb body, and the thermal data is used to identify defects in the plugged honeycomb body.

A method of plugging channels of a honeycomb body and a honeycomb body including plugged channels. The method includes applying a shear force to a plugging mixture including a plurality of inorganic particles, clay, and a liquid vehicle to alter the viscosity of the plugging mixture from a first viscosity prior to the vibrating to a second viscosity which is less than the first viscosity. A honeycomb body is placed into contact with the plugging mixture such that a portion of the plugging mixture having the second viscosity flows into the plurality of channels. Application of the shear force is stopped or reduced to increase the viscosity of the portion of the plugging mixture in the plurality of channels to greater than the first viscosity.

Methods of plugging a honeycomb body

Apparatus and methods are disclosed which apply inorganic particles to a plugged honeycomb body comprising porous walls, an inlet end and an outlet end. The apparatus comprises a particle counter and the method comprises counting a selected portion of the inorganic particles from a first sampling port upstream from the plugged honeycomb body and a second sampling port downstream from the plugged honeycomb body. The selected portion of the inorganic particles are in a preselected inorganic particle size range. Filtration efficiency can be determined while inorganic particles are being deposited, for example to increase filtration efficiency.

Defect detection systems include at least one nozzle for delivering a COparticulate fluid to an inlet end of a plugged honeycomb body. Defects in the honeycomb, if any, are determined by monitoring COparticulate flow at the outlet end of the honeycomb body. System and method for detecting defects in a honeycomb body

In-line inspection and control system to in-situ monitor an extrudate during extrusion. A light beam illuminates a line on the outside circumference of the extrudate skin recording the curvature. A master profile of the illuminated defect-free skin is recorded and compared to successive monitoring of the illuminated skin. Differences from the comparison indicate skin and/or shape defects. A real-time feedback to automatically adjust process control hardware reduces or eliminates the skin and shape defects based on the monitoring and comparison.

Methods of in-line extrudate inspection and feedback control for honeycomb body manufacture

An in situ inspection system and method to inspect a honeycomb body () skin in a skinning system. The inspection system includes a line illuminator () to generate a line illumination on the skin () perpendicular to an axial direction () of the honeycomb body travel, and a detector () to detect the line illumination scattered from the skin () and generate a signal based on the detected line illumination. A controller () is configured to receive the signal generated by the detector (), compare the received signal to a previously stored defect free signal in real-time, and control at least one skinning process parameter based on the comparison. The method includes in situ inspecting the skin () and controlling at least one skinning process parameter based on the inspection. In the method, the in situ inspection includes illuminating a line of the skin () perpendicular to the axial direction () and detecting the illuminated line scattered from the skin ().

Skinning of ceramic honeycomb bodies

A system for delivering and applying a flowable mixture to an article (-) is disclosed. The system includes a mixture delivery system () and a skinning system (). The mixture delivery system () includes a mixer () configured to mix a dry material and a fluid to produce the flowable mixture, and a pump () configured to pump the flowable mixture to a delivery line. The skinning system () receives the flowable mixture from the mixture delivery system () through the delivery line. The skinning system () includes a skinning pipe () configured to apply the flowable mixture to the article (-) and a manifold () that supports the skinning pipe (). The skinning system () also includes an article feeding mechanism () configured to push the article (-) into the skinning pipe (). The skinning system () includes a transfer system () configured to hold the article (-) and move the article (-) out of the skinning pipe ().

Systems and methods for skinning articles

An in situ inspection system and method to inspect a honeycomb body skin in a skinning system. The inspection system includes a line illuminator to generate a line illumination on the skin perpendicular to an axial direction of the honeycomb body travel, and a detector to detect the line illumination scattered from the skin and generate a signal based on the detected line illumination. A controller is configured to receive the signal generated by the detector, compare the received signal to a previously stored defect free signal in real-time, and control at least one skinning process parameter based on the comparison. The method includes in situ inspecting the skin and controlling at least one skinning process parameter based on the inspection. In the method, the in situ inspection includes illuminating a line of the skin perpendicular to the axial direction and detecting the illuminated line scattered from the skin.

Methods of testing a honeycomb filter for defects include the step of wetting at least one of the first end portion and the second end portion to provide at least one wetted end portion. The method further includes the step of monitoring the second end portion for fog passing through the filter.

Methods of testing a honeycomb filter include the step of wetting the outer peripheral surface of the honeycomb filter to enhance the flow of fog through outer peripheral channels of the honeycomb network of channels. Apparatus and methods for testing a honeycomb filter

A plate suitable for positioning with an extruder apparatus is provided in which the plate includes at least one temperature sensor. The plate is upstream of the die located at or near the end of the extruder apparatus. The sensor(s) allow for the simultaneous measurement of batch material temperatures at multiple spatial locations across the face of the plate. The temperature sensors associated with the plate can be used to identify spatial and temporal temperature patterns within the batch flow.
