A method and apparatus are provided for removing liquids from biological waste by the employment of centrifugal force to separate the liquid from the biological waste particulate and into a container separate from a biological waste container, permitting the dried biological waste and removed liquid to be separately and conveniently disposed of. Preferably, a rotatable drum can be rotatably supported within an outer liquid-tight drum, and a disposable porous container, such as a bag made of porous material, can be placed within the rotatable foraminous drum. Biological waste can be placed within the porous, disposable container within the rotatable drum, and the rotatable drum can be rotated at a rate of rotation sufficient to substantially transfer unabsorbed liquid from the biological waste through the disposable porous container and the openings in the foraminous inner drum to the outer liquid-tight collection drum. Solid biological waste may then be disposed of by removing the disposable porous container from the rotatable drum with the solid biological waste therein, avoiding by closure of disposable porous container, exposure of handling personnel to the solid biological waste. The collected liquids may be separately disposed of by pumping them into a sanitary sewer. If it is desired, additional liquid, such as a microbial decontaminating agent, may be added within the porous disposable bag as it is being rotated.

A processing chamber for the treatment and decontamination of biological or medical waste includes a rotating waste treatment system carried within an open-top processing chamber, a cap for closing the chamber opening, a gas-pervious liner carried within the chamber for preventing waste from adhering to the underside of the cap as a result of waste-treatment operations, a sealing member disposed at and for sealing the interface of the cap and the processing chamber, and a chemical indicator carried within the interior of the processing chamber for confirming the presence of decontaminant during a waste treatment cycle.

An apparatus for the treatment of medical waste, including solid and non-solid materials, permits the collection of such medical waste at the point and at the time of its generation in a solid container. The contained medical waste can be subsequently transported for pulverization, decontamination and safe disposal. A separate portable processing chamber, with an integral means to treat medical waste, can be used at locations remote from its power unit for the collection of medical waste and then moved to the location of the power unit to drive the waste-treatment means within the chamber. The separate portable processing chamber includes a rotating waste treatment system that is rotatably carried within the chamber, a plurality of pivotable blades that are carried by rotatable axle pins within a plurality of slots formed in the rotating system, a ring carried by the rotating system to prevent deleterious collections of waste materials, and a plurality of baffle bars are located interiorly of the chamber for preferential treatment of soft and non-soft medical waste material during operation.

The contained medical waste can be subsequently transported for pulverization, disinfection and safe disposal. A separate portable processing chamber to treat medical waste, can be used at locations remote from its power unit for the collection of medical waste and then moved to the location of the power unit to drive the waste-treatment apparatus within the chamber. In addition, a medical waste collection station can provide single and multiple containers, which may be sequentially used, for the collection of medical waste and whose use may be combined with a processing chamber to treat collected medical waste before its disposal.

Medical waste collection and treatment station

A cart-mounted or counter-top-mounted cabinet encloses a processing flask assembly located in an upwardly opening tub portion of the cabinet and which supports a drive motor below the cabinet. A blade-mounting impeller in the flask assembly is received on a motor output coupling when the flask assembly is installed in the tub. The motor, when operated, drives the blades in rotation to move and cut waste materials inserted through the open top of the flask. After a batch of waste has been processed, the flask assembly is removed from the tub and the minced and disinfected contents are dumped into suitable waste receivers with absorber material.

The separate waste collection and treatment assembly includes a closable chamber, a rotating waste treatment system that is rotatably carried within the chamber by bearings spaced on a supporting cylinder carried by the chamber bottom, a plurality of pivotable blades that are carried by a rotating system and have a configuration which, in cooperation with surfaces of the chamber walls, provide effective disintegration, pulverization and blunting of solid waste and cutting and mincing of non-solid waste, and the circulation and disinfection of the medical waste within the separate chamber.

Medical waste treatment system

A medical waste disposal system is provided for disposing of biologically contaminated waste material situated inside a rigid, form-stable container. The disposal system includes a processing unit for shredding the waste material into a shredded mass and for transporting the shredded mass into a disintegrator. The disintegrator mixes the shredded mass with a liquid disinfectant solution to disinfect the shredded mass and disintegrates the shredded mass into an unrecognizable particulate waste material.

Medical waste disposal system

A system for disposing of large amounts of infectious hospital waste includes a generally sealed enclosure containing an apparatus for delivery, disintegration, and decontamination of waste materials. A dual conveyor arrangement provides a positive delivery of large waste containers to be disposed to a disintegrator while preventing material from being thrown from the disintegrator. The disintegrator comprises two, large, counter-rotating hammermills capable of effectively disintegrating articles of substantial size. The system enclosure is maintained at a negative pressure and adapted to prevent escape of airborne contamination from the system. A variety of protective features is also incorporated into the system to clear the disintegrator in cases of overload, to avoid power surges upon system start-up, and to effect an orderly shutdown of the system.

Hospital waste disposal system

A system is provided having a generally sealed cabinet and separator. A blower is provided in the sealed cabinet to provide a negative pressure within the cabinet. A waste entrance is provided in the cabinet which provides a sealed, rotatable input for the introduction of hospital waste to the system. In the system, the input rotates upon operation of a switch to direct solid waste to a disintegrator, such as a hammermill, wiht a flow of disinfectant fluid. Upon disintegration, the waste particles and disinfectant fluid are carried to the separator which is sealed with the cabinet. The solid waste is separated from the decontaminant fluid which is then directed to a public sewer.

A waste disposal system for treating and disposing of infectious waste articles in a substantially controlled, closed, aseptic environment and for converting such infectious waste articles into a safely disposable, non-infectious non-toxic residue of solid waste independent from disinfecting liquid waste. A waste delivery conveyor transfers waste articles from an input region to preliminary waste processing apparata for preliminarily fragmenting the waste for further treatment by the system. Disinfectant spray is deposited on the waste as it enters the preliminary waste processing apparatus with the fragments resulting therefrom, together with the disinfectant liquid, being transferred to rotary hammermill elements to convert the fragment disinfectant solution to a solution of fine waste particles and disinfectant solution. Liquid solid particle separator apparata then separates the solid waste particles from the liquid disinfectant for independent evacuation of same. The system further includes vacuum ventilation elements to maintain any released bacteria or particles within the system until completely processed and disinfected with system switching controls serving to operate and sequence operation of the system components relative to one another by computer.
