Novel analogs of biologically active vasopressin and its synthetic analogs having improved activity are represented by the structural formula: ##STR1## wherein A hydrogen; is hydroxy or lower alkoxy, especially methoxy, B is the peptide residue of phenylalanine (Phe) or isoleucine, Gln represents the peptide residue of glutamine Asn represents the peptide residue of asparagine, E represents the peptide residue of proline (Pro), 4-thioproline (4-thioPro) or 3,4-dehydroproline (3,4-dehydroPro), FNH represents an N-substituted peptide residue of L- or D-lysine (Lys) L or D homolysine (h Lys) or L- or D-orntihine (Orn), X represents a side peptide chain consisting of one or more of Gly, L-Ala, L-Val, L-Leu, or L-Phe, Gly represents the peptide residue of glycine, and G is disulfide (--S--S--) or thioether (--CH.sub.2 S-- or --SCH.sub.2 --).

N-substituted derivatives of 1-desaminovasopressin

The growth of animals such as swine and cattle is stimulated by feeding them feed including the methyl ester of aspartyl-phenylalanine in an amount sufficient to stimulate growth, typically in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 1 weight percent.

Novel vasopressin analogs having the general schematic formula: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of H and NH.sub.2 and Y is selected from the group consisting of --S--S--, --CH.sub.2 S-- and --SCH.sub.2 -- and A=L when B=D and A=D when B=L and a method of treatment using these compounds to increase the level of Factor VIII and plasminogen activator in a subject's blood.

Tripeptide MIF analogs represented by the formula X--D--Leu--Gly--NR.sup.1 R.sup.2 wherein X is Pro or pGlu, and each of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, when taken separately, is hydrogen or lower alkyl, are useful in the treatment of disorders of the central nervous system.

1-Deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin is useful in the prophylaxis and treatment of sickle cell disease.

Method for prophylaxis and/or treatment of sickle cell disease

Polypeptides which are useful in the prophylaxis and treatment of sickle cell disease are represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is Val or Gln; Y is Pro or dehydroPro; Z is a residue of a basic amino acid with a side chain in the D-configuration; and A is a disulfide or monocarba radical, with the proviso that when X is Gln, Y is Pro and Z is D-Arg, then A is mono-carba.

Factor VIII preparations of enhanced potency are obtained from human blood donors by recovering blood from donors who have been treated with vasopressin analogs, such as 1-deamino-6-carba-8-D-arginine vasopressin, in an amount sufficient to increase the circulating blood level of Factor VIII in the donor.

Method for producing high potency factor VIII

Factor VIII preparations of enhanced potency are obtained from human blood donors by recovering blood from donors who have been treated with 1-deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin, in an amount sufficient to increase the circulating blood level of Factor VIII in the donor.
