An apparatus measures displacement of a structure having a curved surface, such as a pipe, conduit, shaft or rod. The apparatus includes a support structure having opposing first and second ends, with a first laser distance measurement device at the first end and a second laser distance measurement device at the second end. The laser distance measurement devices generate dual laser beams that illuminate the curved surface of the structure, detect laser energy reflected from the curved surface of the structure, and generate distance signals based on the detected laser energy. A measurement device on the support structure measures a spacing between the two laser beams. The support structure is pivotally attached to a stabilizing base, thereby providing for the tilting of the support structure and the laser beams. An inclinometer on the support structure measures an angle of tilt. A computer processor calculates position values indicating displacement of the curved surface based on the distance signals, the spacing between the laser beams, the radius of curvature of the curved surface, and the angle of tilt of the laser beams. Tripod-mounted and portable handheld versions of the apparatus are described.

Apparatus and method for measuring displacement of a curved surface using dual laser beams

A computer-controlled system automatically measures and records various physical characteristics of an elongated shaft or tube, such as a golf club shaft or other structural member. The characteristics measured include the principal planar oscillation plane, oscillation frequency, stiffness asymmetry, relative stiffness, torsional stiffness, shaft length, shaft straightness and tip angle.

Automated system for determining physical characteristics of a shaft

A reconfigurable golf club head and a method for fitting a golf club to a golfer are described. Optimum club head design parameters are determined based on one or more of the following factors: the golfer's swing characteristics, ball flight trajectory tendency information, course and weather conditions, golf ball dynamic flight characteristics and personal preferences. Lookup tables or mathematical algorithms, such as impact and trajectory simulations, may be used. Features of the reconfigurable golf club head include a replaceable face plate to adjust the profile of the club face and a replaceable weight plate to adjust the club head center of gravity and inertia properties. Adjustable characteristics of the club face include the loft angle, bulge radius and roll radius.

Reconfigurable golf club and method

A data acquisition apparatus acquires an analog input signal from an analog sensor, and generates digital data based on the analog input signal for processing by a personal computing apparatus. The analog input signal generated by the analog sensor has a voltage component which varies according to a condition sensed by the analog sensor. The data acquisition apparatus includes a first conversion circuit, such as a voltage-to-frequency converter, coupled to the analog sensor which receives the analog input signal and generates an analog information transfer signal having a signal component which varies in relation to the voltage component of the analog input signal. A signal transfer device, such as a portable audio record/playback device, records the analog information transfer signal and transfers it to a first audio input of the personal computing apparatus. A second conversion circuit, such as a computer sound card in the personal computing apparatus, generates a digital information signal based upon the analog information transfer signal. A processor in the personal computing apparatus operates on the digital information signal to generate an information output signal based upon the signal component, where the information output signal varies in relation to the voltage component of the analog input signal. The processor preferably includes a frequency-to-voltage converter module for generating the information output signal based upon the frequency component of the analog information transfer signal.

Data acquisition system

The preferred orientation, or planar oscillation plane, of a golf club shaft is located by measuring the oscillation of the shaft when an impulse is applied. A reaction mass is mounted on one end of the golf club shaft and is attracted with an electromagnet, and the electromagnet is deactivated in order to initiate vibratory motion. Preferably, the out-of-plane oscillation is measured at a large number of angular positions about the shaft axis, and the principal planar oscillation plane is identified by that pair of opposed angular positions in which the out-of-plane oscillation is smallest. The location of the preferred orientation may be marked on the shaft and used to assemble a golf club with the planar oscillation plane in a predetermined orientation. The straightness of the shaft can also be determined by deriving its spring constant from its oscillation frequency and then measuring the restoring force when the shaft is deflected by the same nominal amount at different angular positions; differences in restoring force can be attributed to differences in actual deflection distance resulting from lack of straightness.

A joint angle indication system provides information related to an angular relationship between a first body part and a second body part that are pivotally coupled at a joint. The system includes a first arm member attached to the first body part, and a second arm member attached to the second body part. One end of the second arm member is pivotally coupled to one end of the first arm member. The system includes one or more joint angle variation sensors that provide one or more electrical characteristics that vary based on variation in the joint angle between the first and second arm members. The joint angle is variable over an angular range that includes a first angle and a second angle. A biofeedback circuit generates a first feedback signal when the joint angle is less than or equal to the first angle, generates a second feedback signal when the joint angle is greater than or equal to the second angle, and generates no feedback signal when the joint angle is less than the second angle and greater than the first angle. Preferably, the first and second feedback signals are audio signals, and the second feedback signal has a different frequency from the first feedback signal. The system also includes an angle display circuit that is electrically coupled to the one or more joint angle variation sensors. The angle display circuit visually displays a joint angle value based on the one or more electrical characteristics.

Joint angle indication system

The preferred orientation, or planar oscillation plane, of a golf club shaft is located by measuring the oscillation of the shaft when a horizontal impulse is applied and from those measurements determining an orientation in which the oscillation would be substantially planar. In a preferred embodiment an iterative process is used to converge on the preferred orientation. The location of the preferred orientation may be marked on the shaft and used to assemble a golf club with the planar oscillation plane in a predetermined orientation. The assembly of the golf club can be done manually&mdash;e.g., in a refitting situation&mdash;or automatically&mdash;e.g., in a new club manufacturing setting.

A device-coupled golf club 80 includes a club head 64 which is assembled with a shaft 22 by use of a coupling device 40. Club head 64 is formed with a hosel 68 which is formed with a bore 70 having threads 76 formed in an upper portion thereof and a floor 74 at the base thereof. Coupling device 40 is formed with a body 41 having a bore 42 formed axially therethrough. A flange 44 is formed radially outwardly from one end of the body 41 and is formed with threads 50 from the flange toward the opposite axial end of the body. A ferrule 56 is located on shaft 22 and a tip end 30 of the shaft is inserted into bore 42 of body 41 and secured there by an epoxy glue 82. An exterior surface of body 41 is formed with threads 50 which engage threads 76 formed within bore 70 of hosel 68 to removably secure device 40 with head 64 whereby shaft 22 is assembled with the head 64 to form club 80.
