Embodiments of the invention generally relate to solid state battery structures, such as Li-ion batteries, methods of fabrication and tools for fabricating the batteries. One or more electrodes and the separator may each be cast using a green tape approach wherein a mixture of active material, conductive additive, polymer binder and/or solid electrolyte are molded or extruded in a roll to roll or segmented sheet/disk process to make green tape, green disks or green sheets. A method of fabricating a solid state battery may include: preparing and/or providing a green sheet of positive electrode material; preparing and/or providing a green sheet of separator material; laminating together the green sheet of positive electrode material and the green sheet of separator material to form a laminated green stack; and sintering the laminated green stack to form a sintered stack comprising a positive electrode and a separator.

Solid state battery fabrication

High performance flow batteries, based on alkaline zinc/ferro-ferricyanide rechargeable ('ZnFe') and similar flow batteries, may include one or more of the following improvements. First, the battery design has a cell stack comprising a low resistance positive electrode in at least one positive half cell and a low resistance negative electrode in at least one negative half cell, where the positive electrode and negative electrode resistances are selected for uniform high current density across a region of the cell stack. Second, a flow of electrolyte, such as zinc species in the ZnFe battery, with a high level of mixing through at least one negative half cell in a Zn deposition region proximate a deposition surface where the electrolyte close to the deposition surface has sufficiently high zinc concentration for deposition rates on the deposition surface that sustain the uniform high current density.

Selective removal of specified layers of thin film structures and devices, such as solar cells, electrochromics, and thin film batteries, by laser direct patterning is achieved by including heat and light blocking layers in the device/structure stack immediately adjacent to the specified layers which are to be removed by laser ablation. The light blocking layer is a layer of metal that absorbs or reflects a portion of the laser energy penetrating through the dielectric/semiconductor layers and the heat blocking layer is a conductive layer with thermal diffusivity low enough to reduce heat flow into underlying metal layer(s), such that the temperature of the underlying metal layer(s) does not reach the melting temperature, T, or in some embodiments does not reach (T)/3, of the underlying metal layer(s) during laser direct patterning.

Thin film structures and devices with integrated light and heat blocking layers for laser patterning

The present invention generally relates to electrochromic (EC) devices, such as used in electrochromic windows (ECWs), and their manufacture. The EC devices may comprise a transparent substrate; a first transparent conductive layer; a doped coloration layer, wherein the coloration layer dopants provide structural stability to the arrangement of atoms in the coloration layer; an electrolyte layer; a doped anode layer over said electrolyte layer, wherein the anode layer dopant provides increased electrically conductivity in the doped anode layer; and a second transparent conductive layer. A method of fabricating an electrochromic device may comprise depositing on a substrate, in sequence, a first transparent conductive layer, a doped coloration layer, an electrolyte layer, a doped anode layer, and a second transparent conductive layer, wherein at least one of the doped coloration layer, the electrolyte layer and the doped anode layer is sputter deposited using a combinatorial plasma deposition process.

Materials and device stack for market viable electrochromic devices

A reflective color electrophoretic display intended to be viewed while illuminated from the front window by ambient light and to operate without the need of a backlight has a plurality of laterally adjacent picture elements or pixels. Each pixel is comprised of two or more subpixels, or cells, which are vertically stacked, one directly above the other on the horizontal surface of a reflective panel located at the rear or bottom of the stacks. The cells contain a light-transmissive fluid and charged pigment particles that can absorb a portion of the visible spectrum, with each cell in a stack containing particles having a color different from the colors of the particles in the other cells in the stack.

An ambient light reflective color electrophoretic display is comprised of a plurality of color pixels; each comprised of at least two electrophoretic cells. Each cell is comprised of a suspension of charged, black or colored light-absorbing pigment particles in a light-transmissive fluid. Each cell is also comprised of a light-transmissive front window, at least one non-obstructing counter electrode, at least one non-obstructing collecting electrode, a light-reflective panel, and a color filter medium. The cells of different colors are in a laterally adjacent relationship to each other and the charged pigment particles are responsive to the electrodes. The filter medium in each cell can be a light-transmissive color filter element or a light-reflective colored surface or the pigment suspension fluid can be colored and serve as the filter medium.

The cells of different colors are in a laterally adjacent relationship to each other and the charged pigment particles are responsive to the electrodes. The filter medium in each cell can be a light-transmissive color filter element. Alternatively, the pigment suspension fluid itself or the pigment particles themselves can be colored and serve as the filter medium.

A transmissive electrophoretic color display is comprised of a plurality of color pixels; each uniformly illuminated from the rear by a backlight and each comprised of at least two electrophoretic cells. Each cell is comprised of a suspension of charged, black or colored light-absorbing pigment particles in a light-transmissive fluid. Each cell is also comprised of a light-transmissive front and rear window, at least one non-obstructing counter electrode, at least one non-obstructing collecting electrode, and a color filter medium. The cells of different colors are in a laterally adjacent relationship to each other and the charged pigment particles are responsive to the electrodes. The filter medium in each cell can be a light-transmissive color filter element or the pigment suspension fluid can be colored and serve as the filter medium.

Transmissive electrophoretic display with laterally adjacent color cells

A transmissive electrophoretic display is generally comprised of a regular lateral array of transmissive electrophoretic cells; each uniformly illuminated from the rear by a backlight. Each cell is comprised of a suspension of charged, black or colored light-absorbing pigment particles in a light-transmissive fluid. Each cell is also comprised of a light-transmissive front and rear window, at least one non-obstructing counter electrode, and at least one non-obstructing, vertically-disposed collecting electrode. With the application of appropriate voltages to the collecting and counter electrodes, each cell can be switched between a light and dark state. In the dark state, the light-absorbing pigment particles are distributed to cover the horizontal area of the cell, thus absorbing light from the backlight and preventing it from reaching the viewer. In the light state, the light-absorbing pigment particles are collected on vertical surfaces within the cell, thus allowing light from the backlight to pass through the cell and reach the viewer.
