Flame retarding resin compositions having good thermal stability and good impact resistance. The composition comprises a thermoplastic resin selected from the group of polycarbonate, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, and blends and alloys of polycarbonate with polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, and a flame retarding amount of a melt-blendable, solid polybrominated triphenyl phosphate ester selected from tris(dibromophenyl)phoshate and bis(tribromophenyl)phenylphosphate, and less than 5% antimony oxide or halogenated organic.

It was unexpectedly found that a brominated phosphate ester, tris(2,4-dibromophenyl)phosphate when employed in flame retardant quantities in a modified polyphenylene oxide resin resulted in discoloration of the resin on aging. Neither phosphate esters, flame retardants nor brominated flame retardants when employed separately as flame retardants caused similar discoloration. The use of epoxy compounds counteracted this color stability problem.

Flame retardant modified polyphenylene oxide composition

A liquid composition is provided suitable for use as a flame retardant additive for polyurethane foams. The composition overcomes the problems of high viscosity and precipitates forming in formulations of phosphate esters and polybromodiphenyl oxides and avoids scorch and smoldering while preparing polyurethane foams meeting the California 117 standard. In addition, the composition provides an unexpected advantage of improved efficacy and heat stability. The process for preparing the flame retarded polyurethane foam and the foam itself are also claimed.

A polycarbonate polymer composition rendered flame retardant by having combined these with an effective amount of a phosphorus-containing polyester polymer which is the polycondensation product of a glycol, phthalate and a phosphine oxide of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, may be the same or different radicals selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl radicals and R.sub.2 is a radical of 2 to 8 carbon atoms.

Polybromotriphenyl phosphates provide excellent flame retardancy for styrene modified polyphenylene ether molding resins, and provide flame retardant composition thereof which exhibit desirable processing characteristics, excellent impact strength, high heat distortion temperature, and minimal tendency toward stress cracking.

A polyurethane elastomer product formed by curing a mixture of an NCO terminated urethane prepolymer and a polyhydroxyalkylphosphine oxide. The polyhydroxyalkyl phosphine curative is a compound of the class having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkylene of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 is alkyl of 2 to 10 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 6 to 12 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 2 to 3. Exemplary polyhydroxyalkyl phosphine curatives are (HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.2 P(O)--C.sub.4 H.sub.9 --sec. and (HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.3 P(O).

Cyclic phosphine oxides of the formula: ##STR1## wherein P is phosphorus, O is oxygen, A is an alkylene chain of 2 to 12 carbon atoms, Z is a polar group and R represents the carbon atoms in a phosphorus-containing ring formed by alkylating an ethylenically unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon with phosphine. The cyclic phosphine oxides are useful as flame retardants for styrene modified polyphenylene ether resins.

Epoxy resins are rendered fire retardant by the addition thereto of a 3-hydroxyalkylphosphine oxide. Other halogen containing flame retardants may or may not be present in the composition. Mixtures containing a brominated epoxide and/or a halogenated phosphine oxide provide a high level of flame retardance at low levels of the additive. The epoxy resins may be heat cured in the presence of an acid anhydride or amine to form a polymer having the phosphine oxide incorporated in the polymer molecule.

Flame-retardant compositions having an excellent balance of properties are obtained by flame-retarding rubber-modified polystyrenes with a mixture of about 55-95% by weight of a first flame retardant corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## AND ABOUT 45-5% BY WEIGHT OF A SECOND FLAME RETARDANT CORRESPONDING TO THE FORMULA: ##STR2## wherein X is bromo or chloro, Y is halo, hydrogen, or an alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, or haloalkoxy group, and Z is a tetravalent hydrocarbon group containing 4-20 carbon atoms.
