A process for producing paper webs having a pattern formed into the web is disclosed. The pattern is formed during formation of the web and is made by varying the basis weight of the web. The paper web is produced by depositing an aqueous suspension of fibers between two forming surfaces. One or both of the forming surfaces include lower permeability areas that create lower basis weight areas in the web. The lower permeability areas are contained in the forming surface according to a particular pattern. For instance, the lower permeability areas can be formed into a drainage roll sleeve contained on a drainage roll which contacts a forming surface. The drainage roll can be a forming roll or a breast roll.

Paper webs having a watermark pattern

A method for applying a foam to a paper web is provided. Specifically, a foam is first formed from a liquid-based composition and a gas, such as air. Once formed, the foam is applied by a foam applicator to the web. In one embodiment, for example, the foam applicator applies the foam without substantially contacting the web. When applied with the foam, the web typically has a solids consistency less than about 95% by weight of the web. In some embodiments, one or more vacuum slots can be utilized in conjunction with the foam applicator to facilitate uniform application of the foam to the paper web.

Foam treatment of tissue products

A method for applying a foam composition to a paper web is provided. Specifically, a foam applicator is positioned adjacent to a surface of the web. The foam applicator comprises an extrusion head defining an extrusion channel through which the foam composition is capable of flowing. The foam applicator further defines a dispensing slot through which the foam composition is capable of exiting the foam applicator. The method also includes flowing the foam composition through the extrusion channel of the foam applicator. The foam composition is impinged with at least one gaseous stream (e.g., air stream) to fragment or break up gaseous bubbles contained therein.

Use of gaseous streams to aid in application of foam to tissue products

A method for applying a foam composition to a paper web is provided. Specifically, a foam applicator is positioned adjacent to a surface of the web. The foam applicator defines an extrusion slot through which the foam composition is capable of flowing. In one embodiment, the extrusion slot is in communication with an air channel. The foam composition is optionally entrained with an air stream traveling through the air channel. The foam composition contacts at least one liquid-permeable partition (e.g., wire-mesh screen) to fragment gaseous bubbles contained therein.

Application of foam to tissue products using a liquid permeable partition

A method for applying a foam composition to a paper web is provided. Specifically, a paper web is initially formed from papermaking fibers and is carried by a first moving papermaking surface so that a first surface of the paper web faces the first moving papermaking surface (e.g., fabric). A foam composition is deposited onto a second moving papermaking surface (e.g., fabric). The second moving papermaking surface is positioned adjacent to the first moving papermaking surface so that a second surface of the paper web faces the second moving papermaking surface. As a result, at least a portion of the foam composition is transferred to the paper web.

Method of applying a foam composition to a tissue product

A method is disclosed for topical application of compositions containing a chemical additive onto a paper web. The present invention is also directed to paper products formed from the method. In general, the method includes the steps of applying a composition containing a chemical additive onto a first side of a paper web. The paper web is then wound into a roll. During winding, a portion of the composition transfers from the first side of the web to the second side of the web. Thus, both sides of the web become treated with the composition through a single application of the composition to the web.

Process for applying a liquid additive to both sides of a tissue web

The present invention is a foam applicator system for applying foam to a tissue web. The foam applicator system comprises a foam applicator capable of applying a liquid-based composition to a tissue web. The foam applicator includes an extrusion head comprising a first nozzle bar and a second nozzle bar and having an inner surface and an outer surface. A first end of a flexible scraper is operatively associated with the first nozzle bar of the extrusion head. A second end of the flexible scraper outward from the first end of the flexible scraper. The foam applicator system may also comprise a vacuum slot positioned opposing the extrusion head with the tissue web therebetween.

The present invention is a method for uniformly applying a foam to a wet tissue web is provided. Specifically, a foam is first formed from a liquid-based composition and a gas, such as air. Once formed, the foam is applied by a foam applicator to the wet tissue web. In one embodiment, for example, the foam applicator applies the foam with a flexible scraper contacting the wet tissue web during the application of the foam. When applied with the foam, the wet tissue web typically has a solids consistency less than about 95% by dry weight of the tissue web. In some embodiments, one or more vacuum slots may be utilized in conjunction with the foam applicator to facilitate uniform application of the foam to the wet tissue web.
