Exemplary embodiments of several new metal-loaded plastic scintillators are reported herein, comprising sterically and electronically isolated organotin additive complexes. Distance-dependent quenching relationships have been used as design criteria for the selection and synthesis of these organometallic additives, resulting in increased light yields and improved gamma-ray energy resolution values relative to previously reported PS/PVT examples. Fast scintillation decay properties have also been characterized in the prepared scintillators, rivaling the kinetics of stilbene-doped bibenzyl and BC-422Q-1% while providing higher light yields than these reference materials.

Metal-loaded plastic scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy

A composition capable of producing a unique scintillation response to neutrons and gamma rays, comprising (i) at least one surfactant; (ii) a polar hydrogen-bonding solvent; and (iii) at least one luminophore. A method including combining at least one surfactant, a polar hydrogen-bonding solvent and at least one luminophore in a scintillation cell under vacuum or an inert atmosphere.

Hybrid scintillators for neutron discrimination

The present invention describes the synthesis of a family of metal bis(borano) hypophosphite complexes. One procedure described in detail is the syntheses of complexes beginning from phosphorus trichloride and sodium borohydride. Temperature, solvent, concentration, and atmosphere are all critical to ensure product formation. In the case of sodium bis(borano) hypophosphite, hydrogen gas was evolved upon heating at temperatures above 150&#xb0; C. Included in this family of materials are the salts of the alkali metals Li, Na and K, and those of the alkaline earth metals Mg and Ca. Hydrogen storage materials are possible. In particular the lithium salt, Li[PH(BH)], theoretically would contain nearly 12 wt % hydrogen. Analytical data for product characterization and thermal properties are given.

Method for synthesizing metal bis(borano) hypophosphite complexes

A low-melting point, heat transfer fluid comprising a mixture of LiNO, NaNO, KNO, NaNOand KNOsalts where the Li, Na and K cations are present in amounts of about 20-33.5 mol % Li, about 18.6-40 mol % Na, and about 40-50.3 mol % K and where the nitrate and nitrite anions are present in amounts of about 36-50 mol % NO, and about 50-62.5 mol % NO. These compositions can have liquidus temperatures between 70&#xb0; C. and 80&#xb0; C. for some compositions.

Low-melting point heat transfer fluid

A low-melting point, heat transfer fluid made of a mixture of five inorganic salts including about 29.1-33.5 mol % LiNO, 0-3.9 mol % NaNO, 2.4-8.2 mol % KNO, 18.6-19.9 mol % NaNO, and 40-45.6 mol % KNO. These compositions can have liquidus temperatures below 80&#xb0; C. for some compositions.
