A method and system are provided for dynamic provisioning of snapshots in a data backup system with a software defined storage (SDS). The method implemented by the backup system receives a snapshot provisioning request including a user selection of snapshot objectives by a dynamic snapshot module, converts a file system reference mapping to a logical unit number (LUN) of the SDS, consolidates the snapshot provisioning request to the mapping and snapshot frequency, and passes the consolidated snapshot provisioning request to the SDS to provision snapshots.

Dynamic provisioning of snapshots

A network architecture facilitates the monitoring and control of a number of storage systems (e.g., arrays) by one or more clients. In particular, the network architecture includes at least one storage management server, connected between the storage systems and a number of clients, for providing operation status information associated with the storage systems as well as storage connectivity devices to at least one of the clients.

Multiple storage array control

The invention relates to a method for displaying, for an array of storage elements, logical devices stored on the storage elements in which each element stores at least one logical device accessible to at least one host processor through a storage element controller, in particular a disk drive controller. In accordance with the invention, a host processor operates to visually display, in a first window of the host processor-controlled display monitor, a first mapping identifying for each controller host port at least the logical volumes available at said port. The system then visually displays in a second window of the monitor a second mapping identifying, for each controller storage port, the logical devices stored on the storage element attached to the controller storage port. The system then enables the user to highlight, at least, in the second window, for any selected host port identified in the first window, all of the logical devices accessible from the host port. In other aspects, the system allows the user to highlight any of the identified elements being displayed to provide a correspondence in the first and second windows so that views from the host port side and from the storage element side can be simultaneously displayed and highlighted.

Front end/back end device visualization and manipulation

A method and apparatus for configuring a mass storage system, in which an array of disk storage devices connect to a storage controller and a plurality of host computers also connect to the storage controller, provide the capability, using a convenient graphical user interface at the host computer, for enabling the user at the host computer to determine the status and configuration of the system. The user can also, using the graphical user interface, modify the system status or configuration. Various graphical user interface techniques can be used including 'click and drag' and other user friendly presentations and operations. The system uses either proprietary communications channels between disk drive controller and host computer, or modifies standard protocols in order to enable the necessary communications to occur.
