A material for use as an electrode, and particularly the anode (20) of an electrochemical device, such as an electrochemical capacitor device (10). The material is a multicomponent alloy material, including a host matrix material consisting of antimony, and at least one modifier element selected from the group consisting of bismuth, nickel, cadmium, zinc, silver, manganese, lead, lithium, and combinations thereof.

Electrode materials and electrochemical devices using same

An electrochemical cell, particularly an electrochemical capacitor device (30) includes first and second electrodes (24) and (28) having an electrolyte (26) disposed therebetween. At least one of the electrodes (24) is fabricated on a substrate (12) and includes a multilayer composite electrode active material disposed thereon. The multilayer composite electrode includes first and second layer (16) and (22), in which the ratios of electroactive materials therein is varied so as to promote good adherence to the electrode substrate as well as excellent electrochemical performance.

Composite multilayer electrodes for electrochemical cells

An electrochemical cell is provided with first and second electrodes, and a solid polymer electrolyte disposed therebetween. The electrodes may either be of the same or different materials and may be fabricated from ruthenium, iridium, cobalt, tungsten, vanadium, iron, molybdenum, halfnium, nickel, silver, zinc, and combinations thereof. The solid polymer electrolyte is in intimate contact with both the anode and the cathode, and is made from a polymeric support structure having dispersed therein an electrolyte active species. The polymer support structure is preferably a multi-layered support structure in which at least a first layer is fabricated of a polybenzimidazole, and at least a second layer is fabricated of, for example, poly vinyl alcohol.

Electrochemical cell having a polymer electrolyte

An electrochemical cell is fabricated by providing two symmetric electrodes and a solid polymer electrolyte disposed therebetween. The symmetric electrodes, anode and cathode, are made from materials such as ruthenium, iridium, cobalt, zinc, bismuth, cadmium, silver, and oxides thereof. The solid polymer electrolyte is in intimate contact with both the anode and cathode, and is made from a polymeric support structure such as polyvinylalcohol, having dispersed therein a proton conducting electrolyte active species.

Electrochemical cell having symmetric inorganic electrodes

An electrochemical charge storage device (60) having two asymmetric inorganic electrodes (30, 36) is provided. The device may be fabricated using a bipolar plate which acts as both the conductor, and as the substrate upon which the active electrodes are formed. The bipolar plate may further be adapted to act as one of the active electrodes by activating a portion of the bipolar plate material.

Electrochemical capacitor and method of making same

An electrolyte system for use in an electrochemical cell such as a battery or capacitor, and which includes an aqueous electrolyte and a modifier species. The modifier should be adapted to act as a surfactant, as well as reduce oxidation of the electrode materials in the electrochemical cell. The aqueous electrolyte may be, for example, KOH, and the modifier species may be a porphine or porphine derivatives.
