Several transmission embodiments selectively communicate rotary drive to an orbiting scroll to achieve capacity modulation. In these embodiments, when the motor is driven in a first direction, the orbiting scroll is driven at a rate which is equal to the motor speed. However, if the motor is driven in a reverse direction, the orbit rate of the orbiting scroll is reduced. The transmission ensures that the orbiting scroll member itself is driven in the proper forward direction regardless of whether the motor is being driven in forward or reverse.

Scroll compressor with motor control for capacity modulation

A stabilizing structure for a throw adjusting eccentric cam in a two-stage reciprocating compressor is provided. The compressor includes a block that has at least one cylinder with an associated compression chamber and piston, a crankshaft that includes an eccentric crankpin, and a reversible motor for rotating the crankshaft in a forward and a reverse direction. An eccentric, two position cam is rotatably mounted over the crankpin. The cam rotates to and operates at a first position relative to said crankpin when the motor is running in the forward direction and rotates to and operates at a second position relative to said crankpin when the motor is running in the reverse direction. The combined eccentricities of the crankpin and the cam cause the piston to have a first stroke when the motor operates in the forward direction and a second stroke when the motor operates in the reverse direction. There is also provided a control for selectively operating the motor either in the forward direction or in the reverse direction.

Adjustable crankpin throw structure having improved throw stabilization means

A three phase motor starting system is provided to reduce the in-rush current to the motor in order to obtain a soft start of the motor. The soft start of the motor equates to reduced impact forces on motor parts and device components connected to the motor during startup of the motor, especially a startup resulting from a reversal of the direction of rotation of the motor. The system uses an impedance load in series with the motor windings of the motor to reduce the in-rush current to the motor windings, which results in a reduced acceleration of the motor shaft and a soft start to the motor. The impedance loads used by the system can be a resistive load, a capacitive load or an inductive load, depending on the type of impedance load that is desired for the soft start of the motor.

System and method for soft starting a three phase motor

A scroll compressor includes an adjustable actuator mount that changes the relative position of a non-orbiting scroll and an orbiting scroll to change the compressor capacity. In one embodiment, the scroll wrap and base of each scroll are manufactured as two separate components with a wrap modulator between the scroll wrap and the base of each scroll. As the mount moves the scrolls apart and together, the wrap modulators extend and retract the scroll wraps relative to their respective bases to maintain fluid-tight compression chambers.

A two stage reciprocating compressor and associated HVAC systems and methods are disclosed. The reciprocating compressor includes a crankshaft having an eccentric crankpin, a reversible motor for rotating the crankshaft in a forward and a reverse direction, and an eccentric, two position cam rotatably mounted over the crankpin. The crankshaft and cam combine to cause the piston to have a first stroke when the motor operates in the forward direction and a second stroke when the motor operates in the reverse direction. The cam and crankpin also include stabilization means to restrict the relative rotation of the cam about the crankpin. A lubrication system is provided to lubricate the engaging surfaces of the crankshaft and cam and between the cam and the bearing surface of the connecting rod. There is also provided a control for selectively operating the motor either in the forward direction at a first power load or in the reverse direction at a reduced second power load. A protector for the motor is also provided. In addition, the application of the reciprocating compressor to both air conditioning and heat pump systems is disclosed.

Two stage reciprocating compressors and associated HVAC systems and methods

A compressor with a capacity modulation system includes a compression chamber, a rotatable shaft within the compression chamber, and a roller mounted on the shaft in contact with a wall of the compression chamber. A suction channel is in fluid communication with the compression chamber for providing fluid at a suction pressure and a discharge channel is in fluid communication with the compression chamber for removing fluid at a discharge pressure. A re-expansion channel adjacent to the compression chamber has a first end forming a re-expansion port in the wall of the compression chamber. A re-expansion chamber is connected to the re-expansion channel. A valve disposed in the re-expansion channel is movable between a first position, in which the valve allows fluid communication between the compression chamber and the re-expansion chamber, and a second position, in which the valve prevents fluid communication between the compression chamber and re-expansion chamber.

A motor stator of a scroll compressor is formed of a plurality of force fit uncoated plates. As the outer periphery of the uncoated plates is slightly greater than the inner periphery of the housing, the plates are secured to the housing without the need of a coating. After force fitting the plates into the housing, a tool positioned above and below the plates presses the uncoated plates together to eliminate any space between the plates, forming a solid motor stator.

A two-stage reciprocating compressor is provided. The compressor includes a block with a single cylinder and associated single compression chamber and single piston. The compressor further includes a crankshaft. The crankshaft has an eccentric crankpin that is operatively connected to the piston. A reversible motor is provided to rotate the crankshaft in a forward direction and in a reverse direction. An eccentric cam is rotatably mounted on the eccentric crankpin. The eccentric cam is held stationary with respect to the crankpin when the crankshaft is rotating in the forward direction. When rotating in the forward direction, the crankshaft drives the piston at a full stroke between a bottom position and a top dead center position. The eccentric cam rotates with respect to the crankpin when the crankshaft is rotating in the reverse direction. When rotating in the reverse direction, the crankshaft drives the piston at a reduced stroke between an intermediate position and the top dead center position.

Two stage reciprocating compressors and associated HVAC system and methods

A method of reducing the height of a sealed compressor incorporates the use of a non-cylindrical portion of the stator windings on the compressor motor. A non-cylindrical portion provides a space between the sealed housing and the windings that can accommodate an additional component. In one embodiment, the additional component is the electrical connection, and in another embodiment, the additional component is an oil heater. Typically, these components were mounted axially beyond the extent of the motor stator, and thus required additional space. The present invention thus allows a smaller height compressor profile.

A two-stage reciprocating compressor is provided. The compressor includes a reversible motor that rotates a crankshaft. The crankshaft is connected to a piston by a mechanical system. The mechanical system drives the piston at a full stroke between a bottom position and a top dead center position when the motor is operated in a forward direction. The mechanical system drives the piston at a reduced stroke between an intermediate position and the top dead center position when the motor is operated in the reverse direction. The compressor also includes a control for selectively operating the motor in either the forward direction at a first preselected, fixed speed or in the reverse direction at a second preselected fixed speed.

An electrical control system for an induction motor for achieving optimum efficiency at both full and partial loads at markedly reduced electrical components costs while maximizing reliability over the range of load, and for achieving a two step motor power output in a greatly simplified manner, the circuit having an electrical induction motor adapted for connection to line electrical power at maximum motor operating frequency, and to a second source of electrical power at approximately one half of the maximum operating frequency, wherein an electrical switch is provided for selectively connecting each power source to the motor, wherein the second source is a reduced frequency wave form generator for producing a reduced frequency wave form.
