An apparatus for controlling a temperature for an engine by controlling a flow of a liquid engine coolant through a coolant conduit, the apparatus including a thermostat having a temperature responsive valve for substantially blocking and substantially unblocking the flow of the liquid coolant to a radiator. The valve opens as the temperature of the liquid coolant rises and a spring urges the valve to a closed position as the temperature of the fluid falls. An electromechanical actuator is provided outside of the conduit and is controlled by an engine control system in response to engine conditions. It is connected to the valve by a connector assembly extending between the electromechanical actuator and the valve through the coolant conduit, the connector assembly being positioned relative to the valve to cause the spring to be compressed as the electromechanical actuator opens the valve so that the valve is opened and closed in response to a coolant temperature by said thermostat and positioned within a range of travel by said electromechanical actuator.

Electromechanical failsafe thermostat

A plastic gas cap having a cap element with a plastic skirt having an inner skirt diameter and including ring retaining tabs extending inwardly from the inner skirt, a plug element having a flange at one end sized and shaped to fit within the plastic skirt and past the ring retaining tabs; and a plastic retaining ring having an outer ring diameter and being secured between the flange and the tabs to secure the plug element in the cap element by an interference fit within the inner skirt diameter which reinforces said plastic skirt and makes it more rigid.

Gas cap and components therefor

A thermostat for an internal combustion engine. The thermostat includes a tube type bypass valve member; a spring to keep said valve member in a closed position and a temperature sensitive actuator to move said valve member to an open position. A flow control element is provided to control a flow of fluid past said valve member as said valve member opens to prevent a sudden cooling of the engine after the engine has already reached an initial warm condition. In one embodiment a safety catch is also provided to prevent the valve from closing even if an over-temperature event damages it.

Flow control thermostat for internal combustion engines and method of use of same

An apparatus for controlling a temperature of an engine by controlling the flow of a liquid engine coolant to a radiator is disclosed. The apparatus includes a thermostat having a thermally responsive valve for substantially blocking or opening the flow of coolant to the radiator to maintain the engine at or about a preferred engine operating temperature. Also included is a thermally activated actuator for opening the valve in response to an engine condition such as load or a need for power. The actuator is activated at a temperature different than the thermostat. A source of electro thermal energy is provided to motivate the actuator so the valve may be opened on demand. In one aspect the invention provides a method of controlling the temperature of the engine by opening the valve in response to engine monitoring.

Electronically controlled thermostat

A safety pressure release locking gas cap is shown. The gas cap is comprised of a handle element, and a plug element. The plug element is rotatably housed in the handle element, and has external threads. A lock element is contained between the handle element and the plug element and can be used to lock the two components together. Locking arises by rotation of the lock element, for example by a key, about an axis of rotation which is a first manner of movement. The lock element has also a second manner of movement, which is axially along the axis of rotation. Movement in the second manner moves a valve from a pressure containing position to a pressure relief position. According to the present invention the movement in the first manner occurs independently from movement in the second manner.

Lockable safety release gas cap

There is provided a locking element and a thermostat incorporating same for use in a liquid-cooling system. The locking element has a body portion and an end portion for attaching the locking element to the thermostat. In first and second embodiments, a tab extending from the body portion locks the displaceable valve of the thermostat in an open position when the valve has been displaced a pre-determined amount. In the first embodiment of the locking element, at least one aperture is defined in the end portion to attach the end portion to a lower bridge of the thermostat. In this embodiment, two locking elements are attached to the thermostat on opposing sides of the displaceable valve. In a second embodiment of the locking element, the end portion rests against the bottom member of the lower bridge of the thermostat. In this embodiment, two body portions extend from the end portion to opposing sides of the displaceable valve. In a third embodiment, the end portion abuts against the upper bridge and the body portion abuts against the displaceable valve. In this embodiment, the body portion springs to lock the displaceable valve when it had been displaced a pre-determined amount.

Fail-open locking element and thermostat incorporating same

There is provided a locking element and a thermostat incorporating same for use in a liquid-cooling system. The locking element has attachment means comprising a body portion and an end portion for attaching the locking element to the thermostat. Locking means comprising a tab extending from the body portion locks the displaceable valve of the thermostat in an open position when the valve has been displaced a pre-determined amount. In a first embodiment of the locking element, the end portion extends through an aperture in a lower bridge of the thermostat. In this embodiment, two locking elements are attached to the thermostat on opposing sides of the displaceable valve. In a second embodiment of the locking element, the end portion rests against the bottom member of the lower bridge of the thermostat. In this embodiment, two body portions extend from the end portion to opposing sides of the displaceable valve.
