An apparatus including a bridge member and a clamp is disclosed. The bridge member is positioned in a first plane and has a substrate with a first surface and a second surface; and a plurality of distinct conductive pillars formed on the second surface of the substrate. The clamp has a body, a proximal end and a distal end. The body is positioned in a second plane above the first plane with the second plane being within 2 degrees of parallel to the first plane. The proximal end is positioned along the second plane; and the distal end has a plurality of prongs. The distal end is offset from the second plane in a direction toward the bridge member such that each prong contacts the first surface of the substrate.

Clamp interconnect

A photonic transmitter, comprises a modulator driver having a first and second output ports, a photonic integrated transmitter circuit having a modulator having a first and a second input line, and a first input port electrically coupled with the first input line and a second input port electrically coupled with the second input line, and an interconnect bridge assembly, including a first termination resistor, a second termination resistor, and a substrate. An impedance-controlled transmission structure is formed in the substrate, and has: (a) an impedance control section including a first and a second signal lines electrically insulated from one another; and (b) a transmission section including a third and a fourth signal line coupled with termination resistor. The interconnect bridge assembly transmits an impedance controlled differential electrical signal from the modulator driver to the modulator, and transmits the electrical signal from the modulator to the first and second termination resistors.

Interconnect bridge assembly for photonic integrated circuits

Consistent with the present disclosure, a ferrule is provided that includes first and second channels, for example. Multiple fibers of a ribbon cable, for example, are divided into groups and fed into corresponding channels of the ferrule. Since multiple channels are provided, however, each channel can be made relatively narrow. Thus, by providing smaller channel widths, the fibers in those channels experience less thermal stress. Moreover, the channels are spaced from one another so that the lateral spacing between adjacent fibers in the ribbon cable is maintained in the ferrule. As a result, the fibers are not bent laterally, and thus may experience little bending stress.

Consistent with the present disclosure, a package is provided in which the PLC substrate, for example, is bonded to the underyling carrier though a limited contact area. The rest of the substrate is detached from the carrier so that stresses are applied to a limited portion of the PLC substrate. The PLC itself, however, is provided over that portion of the substrate that is detached from the carrier, and thus experiences reduced stress. Accordingly, high modulus adhesives, as well as solders, may be used to bond the PLC substrate to the carrier, thereby resulting in a more robust mechanical structure.

An optical transceiver assembly for use in a bidirectional system includes an optical fiber to which an outgoing optical signal is coupled. To reduce reflections from the end face of the fiber, the end face is beveled at an acute angle .phi.' to the normal to the fiber axis, and the fiber axis is tilted at an acute angle .theta. to the transmission axis. Preferably, .phi.'.apprxeq.2.theta.. In this manner, crosstalk is reduced without significantly sacrificing coupling efficiency.

Bidirectional optical transceiver assembly

An optical transceiver assembly for use in a bidirectional system includes a beam splitter to direct an incoming signal to a photodiode. An outgoing signal from a laser diode is partially transmitted and partially reflected by the splitter. The reflected signal, which may reach the photodiode, constitutes crosstalk which is reduced by orienting the polarization direction of the splitter essentially parallel to that of the outgoing signal from the laser diode. In another embodiment, which enhances coupling efficiency, a single element asphere lens is positioned between the laser diode and the splitter.

An optical transceiver assembly for use in a bidirectional system includes a beam splitter to direct an incoming signal to a photodiode. An outgoing signal from a laser diode is partially transmitted and partially reflected by the splitter. The reflected signal, which may reach the photodiode, constitutes crosstalk which is reduced by means of a cavity positioned to receive the reflected signal and an oblique surface within the cavity adapted to prevent much of the reflected signal from reaching the photodiode.
