Managing power consumption in a computing system that includes a plurality of integrated technology elements ('ITEs') that receive power from a plurality of common form factor power supplies, including: determining the maximum amount of power that can be delivered by each of the common form factor power supplies; determining whether the maximum amount of power that can be delivered by a first common form factor power supply is different than the maximum amount of power that can be delivered by a second common form factor power supply; and responsive to determining that the maximum amount of power that can be delivered by the first common form factor power supply is different than the maximum amount of power that can be delivered by the second common form factor power supply, throttling one or more of the ITEs.

Managing power consumption in a computing system

Preventing oversubscription to power resources in a computing system that includes a plurality of power supplies configured to deliver power to a plurality of integrated technology elements ('ITEs'), including: detecting, by a power management module, that power delivery capabilities of the power supplies have changed; determining, by the power management module in dependence upon a power redundancy policy and the power delivery capabilities of the power supplies, power settings for the plurality of ITEs; and updating, by the power management module, power settings for the plurality of ITEs.

Preventing oversubscription to power resources in a computing system

A method, system, and/or computer program product establishes a communication session between two entities on a shared network. A request to locate a desired entity on a shared network, which hosts one or more entities that are unknown to a requesting entity, is received from the requesting entity. A desired environment with which the desired entity is associated is selected by the requesting entity. An inquiry packet is broadcast to all entities on the shared network. The inquiry packet, which does not specify a data link layer by which any particular entity communicates with the shared network, includes a request for an identity of any entity on the shared network that is assigned to the desired environment. A response to the inquiry packet provides an identity and data link layer address of the desired entity, thus enabling the establishment of a communication session between the requesting and desired entities.

A method and circuit for implementing an enhanced availability personality card for a chassis computer system, and a design structure on which the subject circuit resides are provided. The personality card includes a first erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) and a second EPROM, each EPROM storing Vital Product Data (VPD) and a first temperature sensor and a second temperature sensor sensing temperature. A primary bidirectional bus and a redundant bidirectional bus are respectively connected between the first EPROM and the first temperature sensor and the second EPROM and the second temperature sensor, and a pair of chassis management modules. Each chassis management module includes a switch connected to both the primary bidirectional bus and the redundant bidirectional bus providing redundant paths, enabling continued function with failure of any critical personality card component.

Implementing ultra high availability personality card

A system and method are directed towards a pseudo multi-master operation on a serial bus. The pseudo multi-master operation allows multiple devices without standard multi-master functionality to operate on the serial bus as masters. In a disclosed example, the serial bus is an Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) bus, which is isolated when an adapter card requires access to the I2C bus, such as to update vital product data (VPD) to a memory device, and to cache the updated VPD to a chassis management module.

Methods, apparatus, and products for managing virtual addresses of blade servers in a data center are disclosed that include storing by a blade server management module ('BSMM'), in non-volatile memory of a blade server, a parameter block, the parameter block including one or more virtual addresses for communications adapters of the blade server and one or more action identifiers, each action identifier representing a type of address modification; detecting, by a basic input-output system ('BIOS') module of the blade server upon powering on the blade server, the parameter block; and modifying, by the BIOS module of the blade server in dependence upon the one or more action identifiers of the parameter block, an address of at least one communications adapter of the blade server.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for distributing configuration parameters. The present invention includes one or more storage devices configured to store data, a first DHCP server configured to process DHCP messages and redirect communications regarding configuration parameters for the storage devices to a second DHCP server, and a configuration datastore configured to store configuration parameters for the storage devices. The second DHCP server may be configured to process DHCP messages and retrieve configuration parameters for the storage devices from the configuration datastore. In certain embodiments, each storage initiator communicates with the DHCP servers, receives the configuration parameters such as iSCSI parameters, and provides the configuration parameters to one or more storage devices.

Embodiments include transformations, code, state machines or other logic for activating in an end node an IP configuration suitable for IP communications between the end node and another end node upon the detection of a direct IP connection of the end node to another end node. In some embodiments, the other end node may have a direct IP connect only to the end node. In some embodiments, the suitable IP configuration may involve a static IP address which has been published. In some embodiments, detecting a direct IP connection with another node may be accomplished by detecting a crossed-over Ethernet connection. In some embodiments, an operating system device driver may activate the suitable IP configuration. In other embodiments, an embedded system may activate the suitable IP configuration.

Methods and arrangements for activating IP configurations

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for deploying sensitive communication parameters to a diskless computing device. A parameter structure module is included to store one or more Internet Small Computer System Interface ('iSCSI') communication parameters in an extendable data structure configured to store a set of basic parameter settings and a set of extended parameter settings. A link module is included to establish a secure link to a diskless computing device over a physically secure connection. A deployment module is included to deploy the extendable data structure over the secure connection to a non-volatile memory in the diskless computing device. The non-volatile memory is configured to provide sensitive iSCSI communication parameters provided by the extendable data structure to a CPU of the diskless computing device during a boot sequence.

Apparatus, system, and method for deploying iSCSI parameters to a diskless computing device

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for receiving digital instructions at devices or controllers sharing an identity. A first controller receives a digital instruction instance over a communications medium. The digital instruction instance may be a firmware instance. The first controller has ownership of the communications medium and shares the communications medium and a common identity with a second controller. An ownership module transfers ownership of the communications medium from the first controller to the second controller. The ownership module may transfer ownership in response to the first controller successfully receiving the digital instruction instance. A request module requests a retransmission of the digital instruction instance, and may request the retransmission in response to the transfer of ownership of the communications medium. The second controller receives the retransmitted digital instruction instance in response to the retransmission request.
