Disclosed are nutritional compositions, and methods of using and making the nutritional compositions, that include calcium beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate and protein. The calcium beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate is in sequestered or ion-exchanged form to reduce the interaction of the calcium with the protein in the nutritional composition and improve the overall stability of the nutritional composition.

Disclosed is a method of making nutritional emulsions, comprising: (A) heating and blending together an emulsifying agent having a melt point above about 25 C and oil having hydrophobic off-notes (e.g. non-encapsulated polyunsaturated fatty acid) in a weight ratio of at least about 1:15; (B) adding the heated blend to a fat, protein, and carbohydrate mixture comprising a maltodextrin (DE of about 10 or less), in a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the oil having hydrophobic off-notes of at least about 1:2; and (C) homogenizing, and then cooling the combination below the melt point of the emulsifying agent to form a nutritional emulsion comprising from about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of process-encapsulated polyunsaturated fatty acid. The resulting nutritional emulsions effectively mask off-notes commonly associated with certain oils, e.g., polyunsaturated fatty acids, soy oil, beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate oils.

Dosage form unit is provided to deliver one or more beneficial agents into a fluid, such as liquid enteral nutritional product. The dosage form unit includes a core containing at least one beneficial agent, preferably a marker dye, which is dispersible in the fluid. The core also contains a compatible binding agent to bind the beneficial agent together. Additional components of the core may include a plasticizer, a standard flow agent, a lubricant, additional tableting aids and at least one hydrophilic agent. A latex coating encases the core. The latex coating includes a mixture containing a substantially hydrophobic base material, preferably formed from an emulsion of cellulose acetate microspheres, which is capable of defining a matrix-type membrane, and at least one hydrophilic component being dispersible in the fluid. A dispersible beneficial agent is preferred as one of the hydrophilic components of the latex coating to allow immediate release of the beneficial agent therefrom. An apparatus for altering characteristics of a fluid. The apparatus includes a canister having a side wall, a first end wall, and a second end wall defining a chamber therein. A beneficial agent is disposed in the chamber. The end walls define apertures therethrough. The apparatus further includes a tubing portion defining a first end portion constructed for connection to a fluid source and an outlet portion. The tubing portion also defines a canister-receiving portion intermediate the first end portion and the outlet portion. The canister-receiving portion defines a first fluid flow channel fluidly connecting the first end portion and the second outlet portion of said tubing portion. The canister-receiving portion also defines first and second fluid flow orifices therethrough. The canister-receiving portion is constructed to be selectively connectable to the canister such that fluid from the tubing portion can be selectively directed through the canister chamber, thereby causing the beneficial agent to become dispersed in the flowing fluid.

The present invention is directed to solid matrix nutritionals designed for the person with diabetes. The carbohydrate system of this invention utilizes a source of fructose in combination with at least one nonabsorbent carbohydrate to achieve the same effect of prior art complex multi-component carbohydrate systems. This carbohydrate system has the added benefits of tasting good and can be incorporated into solid matrix nutritionals. The solid matrix nutritionals may also include a source of dietary fiber and a source of indigestible oligosaccharides. The solid matrix nutritionals may be administered to a diabetic in the form of cereal, bread, cookies, muffins, bagels, biscuits, crackers and bars. Particularly, the present invention is directed to a nutritional bar designed for the person with diabetes which incorporates the carbohydrate system. The present invention is also directed to a method of delivering nutrients to a person with diabetes by feeding the solid matrix nutritionals which incorporates the carbohydrate system.

Apparatus for adding a beneficial agent to a liquid for drinking during oral administration includes a support structure extending transversely across an imperforate walled zone such as the upper end or neck of a bottle or vessel, or of a funnel-like adapter attached to the top of the vessel, with a retention pocket with liquid penetrable walls held by the support structure and comprising at least one beneficial agent secured therein whereby the beneficial agent is taken up in the liquid for drinking during or just prior to oral administration. The beneficial agent may be in either or both of controlled release dosage form or non-controlled release dosage form and may be one or more of nutrients, medicaments, probiotics, electrolytes, rehydration solutions and diagnostic agents, to which a flavoring agent may be added. In the novel method a support structure with a retention pocket comprising at least one beneficial agent is provided in a bottle or vessel with the support structure extending transversely of the neck or top of the bottle or vessel or a drinking tube extending thereinto. The bottle or vessel is provided with a liquid for drinking selected from a liquid nutritional product, a beverage or water and the liquid is contacted with the beneficial agent during or just before oral administration thereof.

An apparatus and method are disclosed for modifying a liquid enteral nutritional product during delivery thereof from a supply to a feeding tube delivering the modified liquid enteral nutritional product to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient. At least one beneficial agent not in controlled release dosage form in a useful, dose unit, amount, is disposed within a formulation chamber so as to be taken up in a liquid enteral nutritional product traversing the formulation chamber while feeding the modified nutritional product into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient. The beneficial additive(s) are selected from nutrients, medicaments, probiotics, or diagnostic agents, or mixtures thereof, each in a dosage form that is dispersible in the medium of the liquid enteral nutritional product in less than two hours.
