Various aspects of apparatuses and methods for enabling a subscriber premise network interface device (NID) to facilitate communication services including digitally derived voice services to be facilitated between a central office and a subscriber premise are disclosed herein. In accordance with one embodiment of the disclosures herein, such a method includes facilitating a downstream DSL voice channel transmission process at a subscriber premise Network Interface Device (NID) and facilitating an upstream DSL voice channel transmission process at the subscriber premise NID. The downstream DSL voice channel transmission process facilitates converting a voice component of a downstream DSL data stream to a corresponding downstream analog voice signal. The upstream DSL voice channel transmission process facilitates converting an upstream analog voice signal to an upstream voice component of an upstream DSL data stream.

Facilitating digital subscriber line services via a subscriber premise network interface device

A separately replaceable printed circuit board or card for use in a shelf of a telecommunications system with plural twisted pairs connected to corresponding plural subscribers via said card, each subscriber channel on each card including a low pass filter connected both to POTS and broadband services.

The shelf or housing can be used as a hub for connecting to a remote shelf or housing that includes the line termination equipment for connection to subscribers. Although the internal bus of the shelf or housing is shown in a non-redundant embodiment, an increased level of equipment protection can be provided by placing one half of a redundant equipment pair in one shelf or housing and the other half in the other shelf or housing and sharing network termination equipment between such shelves or housings.

A telecommunications rack has one or more shelves connected to a narrowband network and to a broadband network for serving a plurality of subscribers. Line termination and network termination equipment are interconnected by a bus internal to the shelf for providing subscriber access. One half of a redundant equipment pair can be placed in one shelf and the other half in another shelf in a same rack for sharing network termination equipment between such shelves. The rack or shelf in the rack can be used as a hub for connecting to a remote shelf or housing that includes the line termination equipment for connection to subscribers.

An xDSL (x-Digital Subscriber Line) signal is multiplexed with POTS on a twisted pair between a subscriber modem and line termination equipment in a shelf that also includes network termination equipment for connection to a broadband network. The line termination and network termination equipment are interconnected by a bus internal to the shelf for providing subscriber access. Separate lowpass filters are provided at each end of a twisted wire pair between the shelf and each subscriber equipment. A shelf can be used as a hub for connecting to a remote shelf that includes the line termination equipment for connection to subscribers.

An apparatus for detecting a change in the volumetric integrity of the interior of an enclosure. The enclosure has an electrical interface for coupling to a circuit board and an access device for accessing said interior of said enclosure. The apparatus includes a circuit board for coupling to the electrical interface. Further, the apparatus includes evaluation circuitry connected to the circuit board for detecting the change in volumetric integrity of the enclosure, wherein the circuitry does not mechanically interact with the access device. In an optical fiber telecommunications network for providing both narrowband telephony signals and broadband video services over a single optical fiber using a single optical carrier, an optical distribution shelf includes a plurality of optical distribution units and interface units for interfacing with a controlling microprocessor. The optical distribution units receive baseband TDM telephony signals in serial format and the broadband video signals and function to frequency division multiplex the broadband video signals with the baseband telephony signals. The multiplexed signal is used to frequency modulate an optical carrier for transmission on a single optical fiber.

In an optical fiber transmission network, a remote terminal fed by a high-rate optical signal includes an internal electrical link called a serial interface bus carrying 24 DS0 channels. The invention includes the steps of and circuitry for connecting a plurality of line circuits to a cross-connect matrix. The optical network unit contains both the line circuits and the cross-connect matrix. In an optical fiber telecommunications network, an optical network unit is provided in the subscriber neighborhood for terminating the optical fiber transmission line and for providing electrical signals over metallic lines to the subscribers. The unit functions to convert the optical signal to an electrical signal and demultiplex the electrical signal to divide out baseband telephony signals from broadband video channels. The electrical signals are further demultiplexed and distributed to line cards serving each subscriber, while the broadband video channels are demultiplexed and provided to subscribers that have requested specific video channels. The system includes a test unit for performing metallic tests and also a means to gather subscriber channel requests to form a video control channel which is transmitted to a remote terminal via a baseband telephony channel.
