A process comprising by producing maraging steel powder comprises forming an aqueous solution of iron, cobalt, nickel and molybdenum metals values in a predetermined ratio, forming a reducible solid material from the solution reducing the solid material to metallic powder particles, entraining at least a portion of the powder particle in a carrier gas which is fed into a high temperature zone to form droplets therefrom, and cooling said droplets to form essentially spherical shaped maraging steel alloy particles.

A method is disclosed for controlling the level of oxygen in molybdenum metal powder, which comprises agglomerating and sintering the molybdenum powder, classifying the resulting agglomerated and sintered molybdenum powder to obtain a particle size of from about -200 to about +325 mesh, contacting the resulting classified powder with a sufficient amount of an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide containing from about 1% to about 10% by weight of hydrogen peroxide to yield a molar ratio of H.sub.2 O.sub.2 :Mo of from about 2 to about 5 for sufficient time to achieve an oxygen content in the powder of from about 1% to about 15% by weight wherein the major portion of the oxygen is on the surface of the agglomerates, and removing the resulting hydrogen peroxide-treated molybdenum powder agglomerates from the resulting solution.

A method for recovering chromium from chromium-bearing material which comprises heating the material which can contain any one or combination of Co, Ni, Fe, Mo, and W with solid alkali metal hydroxide in an oxidizing atmosphere at 600.degree. C.-1000.degree. C. to form a fused material containing water soluble compounds of Cr, Mo, and W contained therein. The fused material is cooled and contacted with water to form a leach solution and a residue. The leach solution is adjusted to a pH of from about 5-8 with sulfuric acid, and a water soluble calcium salt is added. The chromium-rich liquor is then adjusted to a pH of 1-3 with sulfuric acid. Sodium metabisulfite is added to the chromium-rich liquor to reduce the chromium to the trivalent state after which the pH is adjusted to 5-8 with a base to form a precipitate of essentially all of the chromium.

Ammonium hydroxide is added to precipitate europium hydroxide, which is then dissolved in citric acid monohydrate to form europium citrate solution. A process for producing a blend of maraging steel alloys and an oxidizable metal comprises forming an aqueous solution or iron, cobalt, nickel and molybdenum in a predetermined ratio. Thereafter, a reducible solid material containing the metals is produced from the solution. The solid material is reduced to metallic powder particles which are entrained in a carrier gas and fed into a high temperature zone to form droplets which are cooled to form essentially spherical shaped metal alloy particles. These particles are combined with a predetermined amount of at least one easily oxidizable metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, titanium and vanadium to form a relative uniform blend of the spherical shaped particles and the readily oxidizable metal.

A process is disclosed for producing molybdenum-ruthenium metal powder which comprises forming an ammonium molybdate solution, heating that solution to drive off excess ammonia, and thereafter adding ruthenium dioxide to that heated ammonium molybdate solution to form a slurry of ruthenium dioxide in the ammonium molybdate solution. Molybdenum trioxide and ruthenium dioxide are then crystallized from the slurry to produce a uniform mixture of molybdenum trioxide and ruthenium dioxide which is heated at a temperature of from about 300.degree. C. to about 800.degree. C. for a sufficient time in a reducing atmosphere to reduce the molybdenum trioxide and ruthenium dioxide to their respective metals and form a uniform mixture of the metals. The metal mixture is heated at a temperature of from about 800.degree. C. to about 1200.degree. C. for a sufficient time in a reducing atmosphere to stabilize the mixture at a particle size of -325 mesh, and then cooled in a non-reacting atmosphere.

Alloys of a first group of metals containing at least one iron group metal and one or more easily oxidizable metals can be formed by forming an aqueous solution of the first group of metals, forming solids containing the metals from the solution, reducing the solids to a metallic powder, converting the metallic powder to metallic alloy spherical powders, agglomeration the spherical powder with one or more easily oxidizable metals in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, thereafter the agglomerates are subjected to a sufficient temperatures under non-oxidizing conditions to form an alloy. A process is disclosed for coating tungsten carbide with cobalt metal. The process involves forming an aqueous slurry of tungsten carbide having a particle size of no greater than about -100 mesh, and zinc powder, adding ammonia to the slurry in an amount sufficient so that the slurry is basic after the addition of cobalt chloride, adding a solution of cobalt chloride to the ammoniated slurry with the amount of cobalt chloride being sufficient to provide a coating of partially reduced cobalt on the tungsten carbide, removing this cobalt coated tungsten carbide from the resulting liquor, and heating the coated tungsten carbide in a reducing atmosphere to effect the essentially complete reduction of the cobalt and to produce a cobalt metal coating on the tungsten carbide.
