A vacuum-type electrical switching apparatus () for high voltage electrical power. A vacuum pressure condition in a vacuum pressure space () surrounding electrical contact points () is monitored and movement of the contact points between open and closed positions is automatically prevented when the pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold in order to avoid destructive arcing between the points. A sensor () provides a vacuum signal () responsive to the vacuum pressure condition. A controller () automatically inhibits movements of the contact points when the vacuum signal indicates that the vacuum has degraded. A contactor () may be placed in series with power supply () and a solenoid () used to move the contact points, with the contactor being automatically opened by the controller in response to the degraded vacuum condition. An electromechanical opening inhibitor () may be energized by the controller to mechanically prevent the contact points from being moved in response to the degraded vacuum condition.

Vacuum-type electrical switching apparatus

The existent current and thermal path of a diaphragm and a movable rod contained within an electronic switch are paralleled with a shunt which does not have to support external loads, and can thus be made of material more ideally suited for the transfer and dissemination of heat generated by the passage of current upon actuation of the switching device.

Electronic relay switch with thermal/electrical shunt

A vacuum switch which is air operated and which has low contact capacitance, low inductance and low DC resistance. The switch has two fixed contacts and a moveable contact, the moveable contact being insulated from the moveable end structure to minimize coupling capacity between the two fixed contacts. A portion of the fixed contact support structure is cut away to minimize capacitance between the support structure and between the support structure and a ceramic body which is part of the switch vacuum envelope, the ceramic body insulating the contacts and the metal portions of the envelope.

Low capacitance radio frequency switch

A feed-thru type hermetic electrical connector including at least one connector pin feeding through an insulator block within the metallic body of the connector shell. A compression stop arrangement coaxially disposed about the insulator body is brazed to the shell, and the shoulder on the insulator block bears against this top in a compression mode, the high pressure or internal connector being at the opposite end of the shell. Seals between the pin and an internal bore at the high pressure end of the insulator block and between the insulator block and the metallic shell at the high pressure end are hermetically brazed in place, the first of these also functioning to transfer the axial compressive load without permitting appreciable shear action between the pin and insulator block.

A hermetically sealed relay of the reed-type in which an elongated switching control rod is angularly displaced in operation. The extreme positions include internal stops, which may be contacts, in which case the switch is a single-pole-double-throw device. An attached actuator for the switch device provides tolerance-absorbing overtravel by means of uniquely arranged resilient means, such that switch-gap tolerances are effectively absorbed. The device may be of the magnetically latching type or may, in simplest form, include a single controlling electromagnet and only one fixed contact. Two embodiments are described.

Apparatus for improving the life of metallic bellows used in a hermetically sealed device having a movable element therein such as, vacuum relays and circuit breakers. The convolutions of the metal bellows are filled by a silicone dielectric gel for an axial length including several such convolutions adjacent to the movable end of the bellows, thereby to damp axial mechanical vibrations and prevent excessive stress build-up in the bellows portions adjacent to the moveable end.
