1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene is produced by chlorinating benzene, chlorobenzene, meta-dichlorobenzene, ortho-dichlorobenzene, or a mixture of two or more thereof in a reaction medium comprising a liquid phase and a catalytic amount of zeolite L, zeolite Y, or a mixture thereof.

Method for producing 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene

Dichlorobenzene having a higher ratio of para isomer to ortho isomer is produced by the liquid phase chlorination of benzene or monochlorobenzene in the presence of a two-component catalyst consisting of a metal halide, e.g., ferric chloride, and diethylether.

Metadichlorobenzene is removed from mixed dichlorobenzene isomers by a liquid phase Friedel-Crafts catalyst assisted chlorination in the absence of benzene or monochlorobenzene.

A process for the liquid phase nuclear chlorination of benzenes which uses a novel manganese chloride catalyst in an iron-free reaction environment. The manganese chloride catalyst provides a dichlorobenzene product having a higher ratio of orthodichlorobenzene to paradichlorobenzene than is obtained with conventional commercial liquid phase chlorination catalysts.
