The disclosure relates to a method of producing an immune response in a warm-blooded animal comprising administering to said animal from about 0.1 to about 100 mg/Kg of body weight of a composition selected from the group consisting of a copolymer of olefin monomer and polycarboxylic anhydride having an average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 1500 in which said copolymer is derivatized to contain (a) half-amide, half-carboxyl acid groups and (b) imide groups in which said imide groups comprise from about 5% to about 40% by weight of said derivatized groups, and the pharmaceutically acceptable cationic salt derivatives of said derivatized copolymers.

The invention involves a method of weight control in which polymers of unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives are orally administered to interfere with assimilation of fat. Polymers which inhibit action of pancreatic lipase, especially cationic polymers such as dialkylaminoalkyl imides of alkene/maleic anhydride copolymers, are particularly useful.

The filterability, drying characteristics and physical form of water-insoluble, cross-linked polyelectrolytes containing amine-imide functional groups is improved without substantially diminishing the protein adsorption capacity of said polyelectrolytes by heating the polymeric starting material in inert organic solvent at a temperature ranging from about 115.degree. C to about 160.degree. C but lower than the softening point of said polymer for at least about 15 minutes and until said polymer is substantially aggregated prior to crosslinking.

The level of blood cholesterol in a living animal body in which a state of hypercholesterolemia exists is lowered by orally administering to said animal body a pharmaceutically effective amount of a polymer, which is (1) polymerized unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or (2) a copolymer of (a) an unsaturated monomer having, for Example, 2 to 30 carbon atoms and, (b) an unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or derivative thereof as exemplified by octadecene-l/maleic anhydride copolymer. Polymers having lipophilic properties are a preferred class. A typical dosage is an amount which represents in the range of from about 0.01 to about 5.0% of the diet.

Method for lowering blood cholesterol level

The level of blood cholesterol in a living animal body in which a state of hypercholesterolemia exists is lowered by orally administering to said animal body a pharmaceutically effective amount of a polymer, which is (1) polymerized unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or (2) a copolymer of (a) an unsaturated monomer having, for example, 2 to 30 carbon atoms and, (b) an unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or derivative thereof as exemplified by octadecene-1/maleic anhydride copolymer. Polymers having lipophilic properties are a preferred class. A typical dosage is an amount which represents in the range of from about 0.01 to about 5.0% of the diet.
