Optical switch fabric for data center interconnections

A reconfigurable electrical add/drop multiplexing node, a network, and optoelectronic integrated circuit form a novel high capacity fiber-optic integrated transmission and switching system with a baseline target capacity in excess of 1 Tbps. The node, network, and circuit can leverage optoelectronic integration of transmission and switching components along with using the full 'transparency' window of modern optical fibers from about 1270 nm to about 1670 nm for a large number of relatively low-rate wavelengths. The electrical switching fabric can be part of a Reconfigurable Electrical Add/Drop Multiplexer (READM) with similar functionality as a Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) except in a highly integrated fashion with the transmission components. The electrical switching fabric can implement flow switching on a composite signal to provide comparable functionality to optical components in electrical circuitry such as in Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors.

Electro-optical switching fabric systems and methods

The present disclosure provides radio frequency (RF)-based OTN systems and methods. This includes a framework to carry services over RF-based links without using SONET/SDH or asynchronous radio. In an exemplary embodiment, the present disclosure utilizes an OTN framework over RF. Additionally, the present disclosure can also apply to other non-OTN frameworks such as an extended Ethernet frame with forward error correction (FEC) over RF-based links. The present disclosure combines existing OTN FEC with a radio FEC or with an over-the-air FEC to reduce the OTN FEC. Additionally, the present disclosure utilizes unused overhead to communicate RF data rates between radios.

Path protection is provided using at least two redundant communication paths and selecting the communication path having a higher signal quality. Interface protection is provided through a protection transceiver. The interface protection may be delayed while the path protection attempts to restore communication.

Method and system for providing protection in an optical communication network

A new architecture is proposed for making optical cross connect in wavelength division multiplexed networks. The value of optical networks incorporating all-optical cross connects is typically associated with being able to selectively route individual channel wavelengths through several network nodes without performing optical-electrical and electrical-optical conversion. From a network perspective, most work on the optical cross connect architectures have been concentrated on the highest possible capability for the cross-connect itself. The problem with considering optical cross connect architectures in isolation without attention to the rest of the network may lead to unnecessarily complicated hardware. In the proposed architecture, architecture considers the network as a whole and significant cost reductions as well as complexity reductions are realized.

Optical cross connect apparatus and method

An optical switch is described having a plurality of optical input ports, and a plurality of optical output ports. A plurality of mirrors are further included, each of which being configured to direct at least a portion of an optical signal supplied to one of the plurality of optical input ports to a corresponding one of the plurality of optical output ports, such that an intensity associated with each of said plurality of optical signals output from the optical switch is substantially the same.
