A method of treating tissue of a patient's body includes providing a power source coupled to at least one probe assembly. The probe assembly includes an elongate member with a distal region and a proximal region. The distal region has an electrically and thermally-conductive energy delivery device for delivering one of electrical and radiofrequency energy to the patient's body. The electrically and thermally-conductive energy delivery device has one or more internal lumens for circulating a cooling fluid therethrough and an electrically and thermally-conductive protrusion having a temperature sensing element. The temperature sensing element extends from a distal end of the energy delivery device. The method includes inserting the energy delivery device of the at least one probe assembly into the patient's body. Further, the method includes routing the energy delivery device of the at least one probe assembly to the tissue of the patient's body. The method also includes simultaneously circulating the cooling fluid through the one or more internal lumens via at least one pump assembly and delivering energy from the power source to the tissue through the energy delivery device. Further, the method includes monitoring one or more procedure parameters while delivering the energy from the power source to the tissue through the energy delivery device. Moreover, the method includes determining, in real-time, whether a rising impedance event is likely to occur in a predetermined time period based on the one or more procedure parameters and determining a command for the pump assembly based on whether the rising impedance event is likely to occur in the predetermined time period.

System and method for mitigating rising impedance via a pump assembly during use of cooled radiofrequency probes

A method for preparing a cooled radiofrequency probe for use to treat tissue of a patient's body includes providing a plurality of cooled radiofrequency probes. Each of the plurality of cooled radiofrequency probes includes an elongate member with a distal region and a proximal region. The distal regions each have an electrically and thermally-conductive energy delivery device for delivering one of electrical and radiofrequency energy to the patient's body. The electrically and thermally-conductive energy delivery devices each have one or more internal lumens for circulating a cooling fluid therethrough and an electrically and thermally-conductive protrusion having a temperature sensing element. The temperature sensing elements of each protrusion extends from a distal end of the energy delivery device. Further, each of the temperature sensing elements has a different length that extends from the distal end of the energy delivery device. The method further includes determining at least one of a desired lesion size or a desired rate of power delivery required to treat the tissue. As such, the method includes selecting one of the probes from the plurality of cooled radiofrequency probes based on the length of the temperature sensing element thereof that achieves the desired lesion size or the desired rate of power delivery.

A system and method of treating tissue of a patient's body includes providing a power source coupled to at least one probe assembly. The probe assembly has at least one an elongate member with a distal region and a proximal region. The distal region has an electrically and thermally-conductive energy delivery device that includes one or more internal lumens and an electrically and thermally-conductive protrusion having a temperature sensing element. The method also includes inserting the energy delivery device into the patient's body. Further, the method includes routing the energy delivery device to the tissue of the patient's body. Moreover, the method includes simultaneously circulating the cooling fluid through the internal lumens via at least one pump assembly and delivering energy from the power source to the tissue through the energy delivery device. The method further includes actively controlling energy delivered to the tissue by controlling an amount of energy delivered through the energy delivery device and by controlling a flow rate of the pump assembly.

System and method for generating lesions of a certain size by controlling energy delivered and pump flow rate

The present invention is directed to a system for delivering radiofrequency ablation energy to an area or volume of tissue. The system includes a wrap, where a stiffening element surrounds an opening in the wrap, where the stiffening element transfers radial compression to the area or volume of tissue, where the radial compression increases stability of the area or volume of tissue; and at least one radiofrequency ablation probe having an active electrode, where the at least one radiofrequency ablation probe is connected to a radiofrequency generator via a lead. A device that includes a wrap and a method of delivering radiofrequency ablation energy to a volume of tissue via the device are also described.

Device to reduce steam pops and increase tissue stability during radiofrequency ablation

An electrosurgical device is provided. The device includes a cooled probe, an introducer, and a side port for the introduction of liquid into a lumen defined by an outer diameter of the probe and an inner diameter of the introducer when the probe is positioned inside the introducer such that a distal end of the probe can contact a target site (e.g., the site near/adjacent the tissue to be treated). The side port can be connected to a syringe/other liquid introduction apparatus via tubing so that a liquid (e.g., a therapeutic agent, saline, etc.) can be injected into the lumen and can exit the distal region of the introducer so that it is delivered to the target site. Additionally, the syringe can be removed so that the tubing can serve as a vent during treatment with the electrosurgical device.

Liquid delivery method for cooled RF system

An electrosurgical device is provided that includes a probe extending in a longitudinal direction and having a proximal region and a distal region. An inner diameter of the probe defines a lumen. The probe has an electrically insulated portion extending from the proximal region to the distal region and an electrically exposed conductive portion located at the distal region. The electrically exposed conductive portion delivers radiofrequency energy to an area of tissue adjacent the distal region. The device also includes a heat transfer system for removing thermal energy from the area of tissue that is in thermal contact with the area of tissue. The heat transfer system removes from about 0.1 Watts to about 50 Watts of energy from the tissue. In addition, the heat transfer system can sufficiently draw heat away from the tissue without the use of a peristaltic pump for circulating a liquid inside the lumen.
