In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for supporting partitions in a multitenant application server environment. In accordance with an embodiment, an application server administrator (e.g., a WLS administrator) can create or delete partitions; while a partition administrator can administer various aspects of a partition, for example create resource groups, deploy applications to a specific partition, and reference specific realms for a partition. Resource groups can be globally defined at the domain, or can be specific to a partition. Applications can be deployed to a resource group template at the domain level, or to a resource group scoped to a partition or scoped to the domain. The system can optionally associate one or more partitions with a tenant, for use by the tenant.

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for supporting dynamic security configuration in a multitenant application server environment. Common configuration changes required for partition level security can be made without requiring a server restart, such as for example, adding a new security realm for a partition; deleting an existing realm; changing the configuration on an existing realm; adding or removing a security provider to a realm; or changing the configuration of a security provider. In accordance with an embodiment, also described herein is a system and method for supporting dynamic reconfiguration in a multitenant application server environment. Attributes of partition management components, for example managed beans (MBeans) and child MBeans contained within a partition, can be made dynamic and annotated accordingly, so that a restart of servers is not required for configuration changes to those attributes for a particular partition.

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing a partition file system in a multitenant application server environment. The system enables application server components to work with partition-specific files for a given partition, instead of or in addition to domain-wide counterpart files. The system also allows the location of some or all of a partition-specific storage to be specified by higher levels of the software stack. In accordance with an embodiment, also described herein is a system and method for resource overriding in a multitenant application server environment, which provides a means for administrators to customize, at a resource group level, resources that are defined in a resource group template referenced by a partition, and to override resource definitions for particular partitions.

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing web container partitions in an application server environment. The application server environment can include a domain with one or more partitions, each partition associated with one or more virtual targets, and each virtual target including configuration information for a web server that hosts one or more applications deployed to that virtual target. Each virtual target can register configuration information of its associated web server with a web container. When receiving a request for accessing an application in a particular partition, the web container can examine information in the host header of the request and virtual target configuration information in the web container, to find a matching web server for dispatching the request.

For a flexible error trace mechanism, embodiments may be implemented for C/C++ interface libraries, or in programs written in C/C++ or other programming languages. In one embodiment, when an error occurs in a function call, a trace element may be recorded that may include the source file name, function name, line number and other information that may be used to identify the error. In one embodiment, the library function may call a plurality of library functions in a function call stack. For each of the plurality of library functions, if the library function generates an error, an error trace element may be added to the error trace. After completion of the library function, the program may obtain the error trace for the library function. The error(s), if any, may be debugged using the information in the obtained error trace.

A system and method for providing pluggable authentication and access control in computer systems and services are described. The authentication and access control process may be categorized into three components: an authentication protocol, a user repository and an access control model. In one embodiment, the authentication and access control mechanism may be implemented as three pluggable modules: an authentication protocol handler module for the authenticator side, an authentication protocol handler for the side to be authenticated, and an access control context module on the authenticator side. The pluggable modules may be exchangeable to support a variety of authentication types, user repositories, and access control models. The authentication protocol handlers provide symmetrical methods to handle requests and responses in the authentication process that reflect the symmetrical nature of the authentication process.

A method and apparatus for performing user notification. In a desktop environment in which multiple applications, or applets may be simultaneously resident in main memory, it may be necessary to release or unload one or more applications or applets from main memory to provide memory space for a newly selected application or applet. Applications or applets thus unloaded are incapable of providing feedback or user notification of state changes associated with the respective application or applet. An embodiment of the invention provides a user notification class for notifying users of application or applet state changes. For each application or applet that needs to provide user notification, the desktop manager loads an instance of a notification class as an independent thread which will operate even when the associated application or applet is not resident in main memory. The user notification class instance performs all notification functions on behalf of the application or applet. An event mechanism is provided for an application or applet to communicate with its associated user notification thread.
