A bar code reader having a reader module and a terminal module releasably connectable together for communication. Module components may be mounted on a glove to be worn by the user. One of a plurality of gripping portions is selected to provide a desired gripping mode for the reader.

Glove-mounted system for reading bar code symbols

A wrist-mounted terminal for use in electro-optically reading bar code symbols, includes a main body having a display, and a strap for securing the body on and around a wrist of an operator. The terminal includes a detector for detecting light reflected off a symbol. A keypad is mounted on the body for movement between a concealed position in which manually depressible keys are hidden by the body, and an exposed position in which the keys are accessible. The keypad is preferably slidingly received within the body, or hinged to the body.

An electro-optical system for reading bar code symbols includes a reader module and a terminal module releasably interconnected to each other. The reader module includes a manually actuatable actuator to initiate the reading. Reading is initiated either when the modules are disconnected, or when the modules are interconnected, by manually actuating the actuator in both cases. A keyboard may be provided on either module to facilitate data entry.

An optical scanning system for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity has an optical scan module including a light emitter for emitting light onto the indicia and a light detector for detecting the reflection of light from the indicia. The scan module is adapted to be mounted on at least one finger of a user. A first peripheral module has a receiver for receiving a first signal corresponding to the detected reflection of light from the optical scan module. The first peripheral module is adapted to be mounted on an arm or wrist of the user. A second peripheral module includes a receiver for receiving a second signal corresponding to the first signal from the first peripheral module by radio frequency transmission. According to other aspects of the invention, the light detector is located in a housing separate and apart from the optical scan module.
