A rotating group for a microturbine power generation system includes an electrical generator rotor, a turbine and a compressor intermediate the generator and the turbine. The turbine, compressor and electrical generator rotor are secured together by a tieshaft. The tieshaft is prestressed such that faces of the turbine, electrical generator rotor and compressor maintain contact during high-speed, high-temperature operation of the system.

Microturbine power generating system

A flux collector for an electrical machine includes a continuous strand of ferromagnetic material; and an electrical insulator covering the strand. The strand forms a tight cylindrical coil including a plurality of turns that are stacked axially. The insulator provides turn-to-turn insulation. The insulated wire is covered with a binder and cured. The strand can be a high permeability wire made of soft iron, silicon steel or cobalt steel. In the alternative, the strand can be a strip of METGLAS&reg; amorphous alloy.

A floating speed electrically driven suction system for sucking boundary layer air flow off the external surface of an aircraft. A variable speed electrical generator drives a variable speed electrical motor which in turn drives a variable speed pneumatic compressor. Inlet guide vanes are automatically adjustable to compensate for variations in pressure. A surge control valve is operable to port in additional inlet flow as needed to avoid low volumetric surge in the suction compressor.

An electrical machine (22) incorporates foil bearings (24) which are radially interposed between the stator assembly (26) and the permanent magnet of a rotor shaft (12), thus reducing the required axial length of the shaft and increasing the rotational speed at which the shaft bends incident to resonance.

A brushless electric motor with Hall-effect sensors is configured to provide its stator structure with a portion which projects axially away from a main armature. The projecting portion is radially congruent with a second, smaller armature coaxial with the main armature, with a portion of a sleeve in which the sensors are disposed in circumferentially spaced configuration, and with a laminated annular shield iron. The annular shield iron is radially interposed between the projecting portion of the stator structure and the sensors. In this configuration, the shield iron serves to close the magnetic field originating from the second armature and interacting with the sensors while simultaneously shielding the sensors from field effects attributable to current flow in the axially projecting portion of the stator structure.

Motor commutation

A two-pole toothless PM machine employs Hall effect sensors to indicate the position of the machine's rotor relative to power windings in the machine's stator. The Hall effect sensors are located in the main magnetic air gap underneath the power windings. The main magnetic air gap is defined by an outer magnetic surface of the rotor and an inner surface of the stator's flux collector ring.

Flux density in the air gap of an electrical machine is increased by varying the cross sectional area of conductors wound on the stator. Conductors of smaller cross sectional area are located within the air gap and conductors of larger cross sectional area are located outside the air gap. Because the smaller conductor allows the air gap to be reduced, air gap flux density is increased.

A reluctance torque coupler includes a first rotor assembly which provides a magnetic field and a second rotor assembly which rotates relative to the first rotor assembly. The second rotor assembly includes a pair of elongated, arcuate flux poles that are attached to a non-magnetic frame. The flux poles extend towards the first rotor such that they are magnetically coupled to the first rotor. Air gaps between ends define a position of minimum reluctance for the first rotor. When the conductors magnetic axis of the first rotor is aligned with the spaces, the leakage of flux across the spaces is at a minimum. If one rotor is rotated, there is a change in energy stored in the magnetic circuit. This change is resisted by a restoring torque toward the aligned position. In this manner, the torque coupler transmits torque from one rotor to another. The second rotor can be provided with a pair of relatively movable concentric members which allow for adjustment of the spaces, thereby allowing for the adjustment of the pull-out torque of the torque coupler.

Reluctance torque coupler

The motor provided includes a unique laminated stator core and a means for changing the continuity of the magnetic circuit. The stator core structure is split into two part-cylindrical elements which define spaces between their opposing ends. Flux gates fill the spaces and provide magnetic circuit continuity. The flux gates are connected to solenoids which can displace the flux gates in and out of the spaces, thereby changing the continuity of the magnetic circuit of the motor. The motor rotor aligns its magnetic axis with the spaces, and will resist substantial imposed torque loads.

The invention discloses a dynamoelectric machine having a two piece split-stator for assembly about a shaft mounted rotor. The dynamoelectric machine may readily be incorporated into the design of a device having a rotating shaft such as a jet engine to provide electrical output power.

A rotor assembly comprises a high energy product permanent magnet contained within a sheath and metallurgically bonded thereto. The metallurgical bond imparts mechanical strength to the magnet, thereby preventing crack propagation therewithin during operation of the rotor assembly, and minimizes the thermal barrier to the transfer of heat from the magnet to the sheath.

A stator for use with a permanent magnet rotor electrical machine is disclosed which stator eliminates ferromagnetic teeth previously used in stator cores. The stator of the present invention uses a winding support structure made of non-magnetizable, non-conductive material to support the stator windings, which may advantageously be prewound prior to installation on the winding support structure. The stator is easily adaptable to liquid cooling, and has substantially reduced losses due to its toothless design.
