An eyepiece for a head-mounted display includes one or more first waveguides arranged to receive light from a spatial light modulator at a first edge, guide at least some of the received light to a second edge opposite the first edge, and extract at least some of the light through a face of the one or more first waveguides between the first and second edges. The eyepiece also includes a second waveguide positioned to receive light exiting the one or more first waveguides at the second edge and guide the received light to one or more light absorbers.

Methods and apparatuses for reducing stray light emission from an eyepiece of an optical imaging system

A fixture used in the manufacture of an eyepiece, to cut the eyepiece to a particular shape, and a method of using the fixture to cut the eyepiece to have a desired shape. Embodiments are directed to a configurable fixture to align, hold, and protect a plastic sheet (e.g., a wafer) while a laser cutting apparatus is cutting one or more eyepieces out of the wafer. During the cutting, the fixture protects the eyepieces from reflected laser light by providing voids around the laser cutting lines, and by supporting each eyepiece near its perimeter. The fixture can be quickly rearranged for different eyepieces, different eyepiece shapes, and/or different plastic sheet sizes.

Methods for singulating an optical waveguide material at a contour include directing a first laser beam onto a first side of the optical waveguide material to generate a first group of perforations in the optical waveguide material. A second laser beam is directed onto a second side of the optical waveguide material to generate a second group of perforations in the optical waveguide material. The second side is opposite the first side. The first group of perforations and the second group of perforations define a perforation zone at the contour. A third laser beam is directed at the perforation zone to singulate the optical waveguide material at the perforation zone.

An assembly tool for terminating an optical fiber with an optical fiber connector comprises a base having a connector cradle to hold said connector, a buffer clamp activation shuttle slideably disposed on the base to push a sleeve over a buffer clamp of the connector, and an activation mechanism pivotally mounted to the base. The activation mechanism includes an actuation lever to press a securing cap over a mechanical element in the connector, and a drive shaft coupled to the actuation lever. Moving the actuation lever from a first position to a second position activates the buffer clamp activation shuttle and presses the securing cap over the mechanical element.

Assembly tool and optical fiber connector assembly method

An optical connector having at least one removable integrated assembly tool for terminating an optical fiber cable is described. The connector comprises a housing configured to mate with a receptacle, a collar body disposed in the housing, a backbone that retains the collar body in the housing, a removable funnel-shaped and a fiber boot. The collar body secures a ferrule secured at a first end thereof, and includes mechanical element disposed in an intermediate portion and a buffer clamping portion near a second end of the collar body. The backbone has a mounting structure surrounding a central bore at one end. The funnel-shaped fiber guide attaches to the mounting structure to facilitate insertion of an optical fiber into the connector, and wherein the fiber boot is attachable to the mounting structure after the fiber guide has been removed.

Optical fiber connector with integrated installation tools

A communication enclosure is described that includes an enclosure body having a first body portion and a second body portion. An adapter mounting mechanism is disposed in the first body portion, and a connector adapter mounted into the mounting mechanism that is configured to accept an optical fiber connector. The enclosure includes at least one integrated tool for terminating field mountable optical fiber connectors wherein the at least one integrated tool is disposed on one of the first body portion and the second body portion. In an exemplary aspect, the at least one integrated tool is a connector polishing platform.

Telecommunication enclosure having integrated termination tools

An optical connector for terminating a jacketed optical fiber cable comprises a housing configured to mate with a receptacle. The connector also includes a collar body disposed in the housing, the collar body securing, at a first end, a ferrule. The collar body includes a gripping mechanism disposed in a second portion of the collar body. The collar body further includes a buffer clamp configured within a third portion of the collar body, the buffer clamp configured to clamp at least a portion of a buffer cladding of the optical fiber upon actuation. The optical connector also includes a backbone to retain the collar body within the housing. The backbone includes a mounting structure surrounding a central bore at one end of the backbone, the mounting structure having at least one pocket region configured to receive a slit portion of the cable jacket. A fiber connector termination and assembly tool is also provided.

Optical connector for jacketed cables

An optical fiber connector for terminating an optical fiber is provided. The optical fiber connector includes a housing configured to mate with a receptacle. The connector also includes a collar body disposed in the housing and retained between the housing's outer shell and a backbone. The collar body includes a swivel head coupled to a front end portion of the collar body, where the swivel head is configured to receive a ferrule. The swivel head is configured to pivot with respect to the front end portion of the collar body by a controlled amount upon a side pull force being placed on the connector and/or optical fiber.

Collar body for field terminable optical connector

An assembly tool for installing an optical fiber in an optical connector includes a base and a protrusion setting station. The base includes a connector mount disposed in the base. The connector mount can be configured to receive and secure the optical connector on the base where the connector has a housing and a connector ferrule. The protrusion setting station enables the craftsperson to set distance (or protrusion) that a terminal end of the optical fiber extends from an end face of the connector ferrule. The protrusion station includes a light source to illuminate the terminal end of the optical fiber, at least one black body absorber to eliminate unwanted reflected light and a window to visualize the terminal end of the optical fiber protruding from the end face of the connector ferrule.
