An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system includes first and second busses, a first switching circuit configured to selectively couple an AC source to the first and second busses and a second switching circuit configured to selectively couple the first and second busses to a load. The system also includes a storage capacitor and a third switching circuit configured to couple the storage capacitor between the first and second busses. The system further includes a control circuit configured to control the first, second and third switching circuits to generate an AC voltage at the load.

Unintteruptible power supply systems and methods employing on-demand energy storage

A power supply system includes an AC input configured to be coupled to an AC source, an AC output configured to be coupled to a load, a UPS having an input coupled to the AC input and an output coupled to the AC output and a bypass circuit coupled between the AC input and the AC output and configured to open and close a bypass path therebetween. The system further includes a controller configured to control the UPS and the bypass circuit such that the UPS operates as an online UPS for a first input voltage magnitude condition at the AC input and as a standby UPS for a second input voltage magnitude condition at the AC input. A multi-mode converter may be coupled to a DC link of the UPS and configured to be selectively coupled to a battery and the AC input to respectively support battery conversion and current control at the AC input in respective first and second modes of operation of the UPS.

An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) device with uninterrupted neutral from input to output utilizes the same converter for converting rectified AC power and battery power to positive and negative high voltage (HV) rails. A simple circuit is utilized for connecting the battery to the conversion components of the PFC circuit without adverse affect on the performance of the PFC circuit, and while holding the battery substantially connected to neutral. In a first embodiment, the circuit comprises a simple combination of four diodes and a pair of high pass capacitors arranged so that in both power line and battery supply modes the battery is balanced around neutral. In a second, preferred embodiment, one terminal of the battery is connected directly to neutral.

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) comprises a low voltage converter (02); a coupled inductor (60) comprising a first inductor (63) coupled to the battery, a second inductor (61) coupled to a first output terminal of a rectifier, and a third inductor (62) coupled to a second output terminal of the rectifier; a snubber circuit; and a high voltage inverter (01).

Charger

A gate-drive circuit (10) is an interface between a clock (12) and control circuit (14) and a circuit (16) comprising an isolated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices. The clock (12) provides two complementary clock signals (CLK1, CLK2) to the gate-drive circuit (10); the control circuit provides a signal (ENABLE) for turning the gate-drive circuit on and off, and the gate-drive circuit outputs isolated supply voltages (+RAIL, -RAIL), a drive signal (GATE), and a common reference signal (EMITTER). The control signal is sent across an isolation boundary via a 2-MHz push-pull converter in the gate-drive circuit (10). A transformer (T1) in the gate-drive circuit provides the isolation boundary. The power required to switch the IGBT device (16) is sent through the same 2-MHz converter. The secondary of the 2-MHz push-pull transformer (T1) is referenced to the IGBT emitter. As the primary side circuitry receives 'on' signals from the control board (14), the converter runs and charges secondary-side bulk storage capacitors (C16, C18) in the gate-drive circuit. The gate voltage of the IGBT device is held off until the bulk storage capacitors are charged to a minimum value. When the capacitors have charged, the IGBT gate is turned on as the signal is received from the push-pull converter. The gate is then turned off by a negative voltage when the signal received from the converter is removed.

Gate-drive circuit

An UPS apparatus with a back-up battery and successively coupled rectifier, inverter and output filter circuits, having an improved battery charging circuit. The charging circuit has a transformer with its primary winding being part of the output filter, and its secondary winding driving a second rectifier circuit which produces the charging current. The charging circuit contains an impedance preferably connected between the transformer secondary winding and the second rectifier circuit, for capturing only a high frequency portion of the signal from the inverter stage, thereby enabling the utilization of smaller charger circuit elements.

The UPS system includes a rectifier having input terminals for connection to an AC utility power source and output terminals. The power factor correction circuit is operatively connected to the input and output terminals of the rectifier to cause the UPS system to exhibit substantially unity power factor to the AC utility power source.
