A method of preliminarily pressing a bent assembly comprising a pair of bent glass sheets and a flexible interlayer comprising a first heating step performed without vacuum, a biasing step, an unbiasing step and followed by a second heating step performed simultaneously with an application of vacuum. When the assembly so prepressed is further laminated under heat and pressure, it develops fewer bubbles after a heat stability test involving exposure to high temperature for an extended period than assemblies further laminated under such heat and pressure conditions after a prepressing step that includes passing the assembly between rollers prior to the further lamination step.

Differentially stretched plastic with a dyed border along one side suitable for shaded interlayers of laminated windshields moves in an arcuate path away from a frustoconical roll of a continuously operating differential web stretcher toward an intermittently operated web cutting machine, which tends to veer the web transversely every time it starts to pull a length of web into the cutting machine. The present invention realigns the arcuately shaped web between cutting operations when necessary to compensate for lateral veering of the arcuate plastic web from the arcuate path it takes so as to cause the web to enter the web cutting machine at a proper angle and orientation for cutting.

A transparent, laminated window having an exposed sheet of plastic material softer than glass adhered to glass, such as a bilayer windshield consisting essentially of an outer glass sheet and an inner preformed sheet of plasticized polyvinyl butyral covered with a thin sheet of polyvinyl fluoride on its exposed surface produced by lamination under heat and pressure with the thin polyvinyl fluoride sheet supported in pressurized engagement against a smooth surface of a mold, which is preferably a second glass sheet having a shape conforming to that of the glass sheet of the resulting laminated window.
