A folding knife can include a handle comprising a side wall having a side surface, a protrusion extending laterally from the side surface of the side wall, a blade, and a linkage assembly pivotably coupling the handle to the blade. The protrusion can have an edge extending laterally from the side surface of the side wall to the side surface of the protrusion. The edge can include a first surface portion and a second surface portion configured as a locking surface. The second surface portion can extend downwardly at an angle relative to the first surface portion. The blade can have a tang including a locking edge, and can be translatable relative to the handle between a storage position and a use position. When the blade is in the use position, the locking surface engages the locking edge to resist movement of the blade in a first direction.

In one representative embodiment, a folding knife comprises a blade having a tang portion, a first linking element, a second linking element, and a handle. The blade can be translatable between a storage position and a use position. The first linking element can be pivotably coupled to the tang portion at a first pivot axis and the second linking element can be pivotably coupled to the tang portion at a second pivot axis. The handle can be pivotably coupled to the first and second linking elements at third and fourth pivot axes, respectively. The handle can have a first locking surface configured to resist movement of the blade in a first direction and a second locking surface configured to resist movement of the blade in an opposing second direction.

Retractable knife

A folding knife with retractable pocket clip that moves in an arc between retracted and deployed positions generally within the same pivot plane as a pivotally folding blade and whose movement between retracted and deployed positions is coordinated through direct contact with the blade so that the clip is automatically deployed for use as the blade is pivoted into a storage position and automatically retracted when the blade is pivoted to a position for use. The pocket clip is configured to be uniquely sheltered from snagging hazards and to secure the folding knife to a pocket by means of a unique retentive characteristic resulting from localized tension advantageously generated along the pocket edge and maintained by compression exerted upon the body of the knife as it rests within the pocket.

A folding knife (or tool) having opposing handle halves and at least one knife blade (or tool) pivotally attached there between by an adjustable pivot. The adjustable pivot is configured to rigidly connect the opposing handle halves at the pivot point under load from fully tightened fasteners. The distance between opposing handle halves is both adjustable and rigidly fixable, resulting in improved assembly resistance to deflection from shear and torsion loads and reduced tendency of the blade (or tool) to loosen under hard use.

A folding knife with a retractable clip is disclosed. The folding knife comprises at least two rigid plates housing at least one knife blade and the retractable clip. The retractable clip is slidably mounted between the two rigid plates and traverses a path between a retracted position and an extended position defined by a guide slot in a base portion of the clip. A guide pin intermediate the slot and between the plates limits the translational movement of the retractable clip such that its extension is optimal for affixing it onto clothing by means of an elongated member attached to the base portion, and its retraction within the housing space renders a smooth facing to the knife.
