A method and system are provided for improving predictions of electrical power usage. In the method and system, load and/or environmental data is classified into data sets that correspond to different modes of operation of an electrical load. Different predictive models are also provided for each set of classified data. The predictive models may provide more efficient and/or more accurate predictions of power usage since each model is limited to a particular mode of operation.

Hierarchical method for prediction of loads with high variance

Architectures, apparatuses, methods, systems, and techniques for controlling electrical power distribution network are disclosed. Embodiment distributed, hierarchical controls including layered locational energy service control variables may be utilized to determine and control the provision of energy services, including real power, reactive power (VAR), and capacity reserves, by DERs in a distribution network. In a first ex-ante iteration a simulation may be performed to calculate a set of subnetwork-specific control variables based on subnetwork locational energy service prices and a plurality of sets of DER-specific control variables based on DER locational energy service prices. A second ex-ante iteration calculates a set of actual subnetwork-specific control variables based on subnetwork locational energy service prices and a plurality of sets of actual DER specific control variables based on DER locational energy service prices. Provision of energy services by DERs in a distribution network occurs in response to the determined control variables.

Control architectures for power distribution networks with distributed energy resources

A method for performing energy management for a building includes generating a stack of energy loads representative of a plurality of building energy loads. The energy loads are prioritized from highest priority energy loads to lowest priority energy loads. The prioritized energy loads are then compared to a building power threshold. The lowest priority energy loads are shed until a sum of remaining energy loads is equal to or less than the building power threshold. The remaining energy loads are serviced. The processes of prioritizing the energy loads, comparing the prioritized energy loads to a building power threshold, and shedding the lowest priority energy loads is repeated in response to changes in circumstances affecting the building.

Systems and methods for performing building energy management

Systems, apparatus, and methods are disclosed for emergency lighting and evacuation. A building may include several emergency lighting stations in which at least some, if not all, of the lighting station includes a lighting device, a motion sensor, a speaker, a video camera, and a wireless access point. A controller adapter may provide power to and communicate with the lighting stations via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) connections. A central controller may communicate with the controller adapter to control the emergency lighting stations through the PoE connections.

A method for performing building power management includes interfacing a power manager with an upstream controller to obtain a demand response event signal; receiving and parsing the demand response event signal; determining a power target based on a payload, and demand response begin and end times specified in the demand response event signal; evaluating whether an average power exceeds or falls below a limit; determining whether a shed action or a restore action is required; determining which variable and fixed electrical loads are to be maintained, shed or restored; interfacing the power manager with a building automation system (BAS); providing the BAS with a load control signal instructing that selected variable and fixed electrical loads are to be shed or restored; and selectively maintaining, shedding or restoring the selected variable and fixed electrical loads responsive to the load control signal.

Coordination of a plurality of resources is disclosed to respond to a local service target. A local measurement is taken by a first resource and, if the first resource cannot satisfy the local service target, short range recruitment of one or more additional resources is performed by providing a first signal to a cluster of resources associated with the first resource. If the short range recruitment does not satisfy the local service target, a second signal is provided to a network resource controller for long range recruitment of one or more resources to satisfy the local service target.

System and method for coordinating resources

A method for a building automation system to control a comfort level in a building includes tracking a building occupant's activity data using a wearable activity tracker. A smartphone is coupled to the wearable activity tracker. Activity data is collected from the wearable activity tracker using a smartphone app operating on the building occupant's smartphone, and a comfort value is determined using the smartphone app based on the activity data. A report of the comfort value is transmitted to a building automation system (BAS) app from the smartphone, and the output of a building system is controlled based on the comfort value.

Technologies for optimally individualized building automation

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of building power management are disclosed herein. One exemplary embodiment is a system comprising a load management controller and a power circuit interrupter. The load management controller is configured to repeatedly perform a first test wherein a time rate of change of temperature of building regions is determined, repeatedly perform a second test wherein a lighting controller is operated to rank a plurality of lighting loads according to ambient light of building regions associated with the plurality of lighting loads, assign the plurality of HVACR loads and lighting loads to a plurality of load shed groups, and reduce power consumption by the plurality of HVACR loads and the plurality of lighting loads in order of the ranked load shed groups effective to minimize occupant perceptibility of the power consumption reduction while implementing the operator specified priority criteria.

Rule-based load shedding algorithm for building energy management

One exemplary embodiment is a system including nanogrid controller configured to receive power bids each including a power magnitude value and a bid value from a plurality of resource controllers, evaluate the power bids to determine resource control commands for respective resource controllers and a power bid feedback value, and transmit the resource control commands and a power bid feedback value to the plurality of resource controllers. The plurality of resource controllers are configured to generate and transmit the power bids to the nanogrid controller, receive the resource control command and in response thereto at least one of shed or restore one or more of the power loads and control a supply power from one or more of the power sources, and receive the power bid feedback value and in response thereto generate an updated power bid and transmit the updated power bid to the nanogrid controller.

Optimization of nanogrid controls and operation

A method for controlling a temperature of a building using a building thermal model of the building in a model predictive control (MPC) system includes measuring the temperature and a rate of change of temperature for at least one zone that is included in the building thermal model so as to determine an error from a temperature and rate of change of temperature that is predicted by the MPC system. Possible causes of the error and a probability of each of the possible causes of error occurring are determined. An impact of each of the possible causes is evaluated so as to identify at least one of the possible causes which would reduce the error. The building thermal model is adapted based on the at least one identified possible cause and the temperature of the building is controlled using the adapted building thermal model in an MPC controller.

Adaptive modeling method and system for MPC-based building energy control

A wind turbine is disclosed having a generator and rectifier and structured to provide direct current power that in one form is medium voltage direct current (MVDC). The wind turbine includes a crowbar circuit arranged to protect from a condition such as an overvoltage. The crowbar can be activated based on a voltage measurement or rate of change of voltage. A resistor can be coupled to the crowbar to absorb excess power provided by the generator during the overvoltage condition. Individual wind turbines in a wind farm can each have individual crow bars that can be activated based on local measurement of a voltage condition. In some forms the crowbar can be coupled with a transformer, for example coupled with a tertiary winding of a three winding transformer.

A hybrid alternating current (AC)/direct current (DC) distribution system for multiple-floor buildings includes per-floor rectifiers for converting supply side AC to DC. Each rectifier is configured to supply a plurality of DC loads associated with one floor of a multiple-floor building. The system further includes per-floor DC busses, each of the DC busses being configured to distribute the DC to the DC loads its respective floor. The system further includes at least one AC bus for supplying AC power to AC loads in the building.
