A vehicle exhaust system includes an exhaust pipe defining an exhaust gas flow path, a heat recovery device connected to the exhaust pipe, and a diverter valve that controls exhaust gas flow between the exhaust pipe and heat recovery device. The diverter valve is moveable between at least a heat recovery mode where the diverter valve blocks flow through the exhaust pipe and directs flow into the heat recovery device, a full bypass acoustic mode where the diverter valve blocks flow through the heat recovery device and directs flow through the exhaust pipe, a transition mode where the diverter valve partially blocks flow through the heat recovery device and partially blocks flow through the exhaust pipe, and a partial bypass acoustic mode where the diverter valve blocks flow through the heat recovery device and partially blocks flow through the exhaust pipe.

A vehicle exhaust system includes a first component that receives exhaust gas output from an engine and a second component that is fluidly coupled to the first component to define an upstream portion of a vehicle exhaust system. A vehicle frame member includes an internal acoustic volume. A pipe connects the internal acoustic volume in parallel to the upstream portion of the vehicle exhaust system.

A muffler for a vehicle exhaust system includes a first outer shell, a second outer shell that cooperates with the first outer shell to define a muffler interior cavity, and at least one porous partition that separates the muffler interior cavity into at least first and second sub-cavities. In one example, the porous partition is integrally molded with at least one of the first and second outer shells. In one example, an exhaust tube extends through the first sub-cavity and acoustic fiber material is located within the first sub-cavity.

An exhaust valve assembly includes a flapper valve that is mounted on a shaft for rotation within an exhaust component housing between a closed position, an intermediate position, and an open position. An electric actuator is coupled to the shaft to control movement of the flapper valve. The electric actuator moves the flapper valve to the open position for high speed engine conditions. When engine speeds are lowered, and while all engine cylinders remain active, the electric actuator moves the flapper valve to the intermediate position. Once the flapper valve is in the intermediate position, if an engine cylinder is subsequently deactivated, the electric actuator quickly and quietly moves the flapper valve from the intermediate position to the closed position.

A passive valve assembly for an exhaust system is mounted within an exhaust tube. The exhaust tube has a bore that defines an exhaust flow path having a cross-sectional area. One end of the exhaust tube is to be connected to a first exhaust component and a second end of the exhaust tube is to be connected to a second exhaust component such that the exhaust tube forms a sole exhaust path between the first and the second exhaust components. The passive valve assembly includes a vane that is mounted within the bore, and which is moveable between an open position and a closed position. A resilient member biases the vane toward the closed position. When the vane is in the closed position, the vane covers 80% to 97% of the cross-sectional area.

A dual exhaust system includes a first exhaust component defining a first exhaust path and a second exhaust component defining a second exhaust path that is different from the first exhaust path. A first valve is associated with the first exhaust path and a second valve is associated with the second exhaust path. The first valve and second valve operate independently of each other to vary exhaust flow and provide sufficient noise control for varying applications.

A vehicle exhaust component includes an outer shell defining an internal cavity, at least one baffle located within the internal cavity, and at least one tube supported by the baffle. The baffle is fixed to the outer shell and includes at least one opening. At least one slot is formed within the one of the first and second tube ends at the at least one opening. The slot facilitates noise reduction during cool down of the vehicle exhaust component.

An exhaust component includes at least one muffler that has an inlet and an outlet. One pipe body is connected to each of the inlet and the outlet. The pipe bodies each have first and second ends that define a respective overall pipe length. Each pipe body defines a sole exhaust flow path between their first and second ends. A passive valve assembly is mounted outside of the muffler and within one of the pipe bodies. The passive valve assembly is positioned at a location within a first 25% of the overall pipe length of one of the pipe bodies relative to the inlet or outlet of the muffler.
