A protective sheath for tools to prevent marring of finished surfaces when the tool is being used. The sheath is integrally formed as a one-piece elastomeric body that is applied to the exterior surface of the tool, with at least one end of the sheath projecting slightly beyond an end of the tool. In one embodiment the sheath projects at both ends beyond the ends of the tool. One of the projecting ends functions to contact the finished surface and prevent contact between the tool and finished surface, and the other projecting end functions to span the coupling between the tool and another tool. The elastomeric body is freely rotatable relative to the tool and fixed axially relative thereto, and provides a non-rotating surface that may be grasped by a user to support and guide the tool. Annular ribs on the inner surface of the sheath and/or a lubricant incorporated in the material of the sheath provide a reduction in friction, enabling the sheath to rotate freely on the tool even when it is grasped tightly by a person to support and guide the tool.

A beam of neutrino or antineutrino particles is detected with a crystal containing coherent elastic scatterers for the particles. The elastic scatterers respond to the particles of the beam incident thereon by transferring momentum from the particles to mechanical momentum in the crystal. The mechanical momentum transferred to the crystal by the momentum of the particles is detected by a torsion balance carrying the crystal or a transducer on a tuning fork carrying the crystal. The beam incident on the crystal carried by the tuning fork is amplitude modulated by a chopper including several scatterers for the particles in the path of the beam.

An energy beam, particularly a neutrino beam or an optical radiation beam, is detected by irradiating a material with the beam in the presence of electromagnetic fields. The material is such that the beam is coherently scattered thereby, and the coherent scattering of the beam causes coherent stimulated emission of radiant energy fields in the material. Electric or magnetic fields adjust the scatterer energy levels so that energy and momentum are conserved overall, and for detection. The neutrino beam causes derivation of RF photons which are detected by a radio receiver. Alternatively, the neutrino beam irradiates a bulk material having nuclei with non-zero spin and non-zero magnetic moments and with sufficient stiffness to recoil as a single entity after absorbing momentum from each neutrino in the beam. Optical radiation photons irradiate a transparent bulk material having nuclei with non-zero spin and non-zero magnetic moments; the nuclei have sufficient stiffness to recoil as a single entity after absorbing momentum from each photon. An applied D.C. magnetic field produces a significantly large number of aligned magnetic moments in the material for photon scattering. An optical beam is also detected by irradiating a capacitor having a transparent electrode that is biased to produce free electrons at an interface between the electrode and a dielectric. The free electrons scatter the optical radiation to produce coherent RF energy that is detected by a radio receiver. An optical beam is also detected by irradiating a crystal having magnetic dipoles aligned by a magnetic field. A coherent interaction between the dipoles and beam occurs to change the dipole spin state that is detected by a nuclear magnetic resonance detector.

Energy detection method and apparatus

The record indexing system includes a substrate sheet with a plurality of removable labels adhered on one surface of that sheet. The labels are substantially uniform in size and each extends along an associated longitudinal axis. Each label includes three zones on its top surface. The first zone extends from one end of the label along its longitudinal axis, the second zone extends from the other end of the label along that axis and the third zone separates the first and second zones and has a predetermined length in the direction of the axis. The first and second zones are characterized by one optical absorption spectrum and the third zone is characterized by another optical absorption spectrum. The separator zones for the labels are offset from one end of the labels by a different distance for each label.

A folder and fastener for retaining perforated sheets are provided with a fastener travel limiter secured on the inner surface of the upper flap of the folder. The fastener comprises a flexible tubular member attached to the inner surface of the lower flap of the folder and providing two ends extending through the sheet perforations, and a stiff closure element having ends releasably engaging the flexible member ends. The travel limiter engages the closure element and defines a travel space for it, permitting free travel of the closure element parallel with the upper flap inner surface during opening and closing of the folder.
