The invention provides a method of making a flexible and self-supporting insulating end cone liner comprising resilient and compressible non-intumescent material molded into a single, continuous piece having a three dimensional cone shape, with the insulating material comprising inorganic fibers and a binder, as well as a method of making a pollution control device that includes such an end cone liner.

Method of making self-supporting insulating end cone liners and pollution control devices

The invention provides a flexible and self-supporting insulating end cone liner comprising resilient and compressible intumescent or non-intumescent material molded into a single, continuous piece having a three dimensional cone shape, with the insulating material comprising inorganic fibers and an organic binder, and a pollution control device that includes such an end cone liner.

Self-supporting insulating end cone liner and pollution control device

A thin-walled structure (e.g., an end cone insulator () and/or a mounting mat) () comprising insulating material suitable for insulating portions (e.g., an end cone) of a pollution control device () and/or mounting material suitable for mounting a pollution control element in a pollution control device () (e.g., a catalytic element in a catalytic converter, a filter element in a diesel or gasoline engine exhaust filter, etc.). The thin-walled structure can comprise an insulating material and/or mounting material in the form, for example, of a sheet, mat () or three-dimensional thin walled structure (e.g., a single piece or multiple piece three dimensional end cone insulator). A pressure sensitive () adhesive is bonded to the intermediate adhesive () and used to secure the thin-walled structure in place in the pollution control device ().

System for securing the end cone or mounting mat of a pollution control device

The invention provides a preform insulating end cone suitable for forming the end cone of a pollution control device. The preform insulating end cone includes a cone shaped intumescent or non-intumescent sheet material. The sheet material has a plurality of slits enabling the sheet material to be cone shaped. A shape retaining element is in intimate contact with the intumescent sheet material. The shape retaining element enables the intumescent sheet material to maintain a cone shape. The invention also provides methods of making preform insulating end cones of the invention.

The mounting material is positioned around the monolith in a specific configuration to provide a tight fitting insulating wrap about the outer surface of the monolith. Penetrations or passageways through fire resistant walls, floors, partitions and ceilings are frequently necessary to provide for present or future pipes, cables or conduits. A device fixed to the walls of the penetration provides a barrier to prevent the passing of fire, heat, smoke and toxic gases, and water through the penetration under adverse conditions of fire or elevated temperatures. The device includes at least one end cap capable of providing a cold smoke seal. An intumescent material which in the event of excessive heat or fire, foams and expands to substantially fill the penetration, is provided. The device may include a laminated restraining layer to provide assurance that the char formed during the intumescent reaction to fire and heat, is generated so that the penetration cavity is optimally filled.
