A polymeric laminate for use in polymeric films, and packaging material and packages made therefrom, that is roughened or knurled to produce a series of nicks or cuts over substantially the entire surface area of the laminate, producing an easy-opening feature. The laminate may be a multilayer, polymeric structure that may comprise an oriented polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, or a biaxially oriented nylon. The packaging material of the invention may contain a sealant film, either a single layer or multilayer film, and may also comprise an intermediate layer of foil.

A multiple layer packaging film is based on three layers and wherein polyethylene terephthalate is one of the layers. All three layers are oriented. The three layers may be used as a stand-alone film, or may be combined with other layers to achieve additional beneficial properties. Desirably, the polyethylene terephthalate may be metallized, then laminated to a reverse printed layer of oriented polypropylene or polyester.

Multiple layer packaging film

The invention discloses a multiple layer packaging film, packages made therefrom and a method of opening the packages. The invention provides inseparable seal strength and in some cases hermetic seals, in combination with peelable ply separation opening for access to the contents of the package, while at the same time providing excellent barriers to transmission of oxygen and moisture. Certain embodiments provide for improved abuse resistance, excellent graphics, and other improvements. The method of opening the package depends on separating opposing ones of the package sidewalls, forcing the opening tear to be propagated partially through the film to a peelable layer interface, with subsequent ply separation along the interface to effect completion of opening of the package.

An improved package and method of packaging, including an oil-containing product, includes a multiple layer packaging sheet material which has reduced sensitivity to cockling. The multiple layer sheet material includes a layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil, giving a cockled appearance. With reference to the package structure, the sheet material also includes a layer which impedes penetration of oil, the impeding layer being between the oil-containing product and the layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil. The impeding layer comprises polypropylene.

Method for making package having oil-containing product

Multiple layer films and containers. The films have a first layer of either nylon 6,6 or a combination of nylon 6,6 with nylon 6 wherein the melting point temperature of the combination is greater than the melting point temperature of the corresponding nylon 6. A second layer is comprised of linear low density polyethylene, and 0% to 40% low density polyethylene. A third adhesive layer is disposed between the first and second layers. The containers are susceptible of being sealed with included gas at low pressure, and subsequently boiled in water without rupture of the seals. The film is preferably coextruded from tubular die, thereby setting forth a new method for forming a mulitple layer film comprising a combination of linear low density polyethylene, optionally with up to 40% low density polyethylene, and nylon 6,6, optionally combined with nylon 6 in a composition having a melting point temperature greater than that of the corresponding nylon 6.

A three layer heat shrinkable film is disclosed, along with preferred process for making it. The film comprises a first heat sealable layer of an ionomer, a second layer of a vinylidene chloride copolymer, and a third layer of a blend of an ionomer and an EVA copolymer. The EVA content is no greater than 20% of the blend by weight, and the vinyl acetate content is at least 4.5% of the blend by weight. In the preferred process, a three layer tape is coextruded and cooled, and reheated to 197.degree.-203.degree. F., and oriented in a conventional double bubble process.

An improved package, including an oil-containing product, includes a multiple layer packaging sheet material which is free from cockling. The multiple layer sheet material includes a layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil, giving a cockled appearance. With reference to the package structure, the sheet material also includes an oil barrier layer between the oil-containing product and the layer which is susceptible to being swelled when in contact with oil. The barrier layer comprises either nylon or ethylene vinyl alcohol.

An unbalanced polymeric film has a plurality of adjacent molecularly oriented layers. The first, second, and third layers are molecularly oriented, and are, respectively (1) polypropylene, (2) anhydride modified polypropylene and (3) a barrier layer of either ethylene vinyl alcohol or nylon or a blend of ethylene vinyl alcohol and nylon. A fourth layer is optionally oriented and serves as a heat sealable layer having good adhesion to the barrier layer. In a more sophisticated structure, the fourth layer is oriented and serves an adhesive layer between the barrier layer and a fifth sealant layer. The fifth layer is then optionally oriented. A process for making the films comprises heating the exterior surfaces of the two surface layers to a temperature between 10.degree. and 100.degree. F. below the respective heat sealing temperature of each of the respective surface layers, stretching the so-heated film, annealing the stretched film, and cooling the annealed film.
